There is a wonderful family here in West Jordan who is dealing with a lot right now. Their husband and father has been struggling with cancer for quite some time and has just been recently diagnosed with an incurable cancer. The doctors have given him 6 - 12 months to live. They have five children ranging from 16 down to 3.
The community is trying to raise money to provide a family trip for them while their father is still feeling well enough to go. The Walk for the Wachs is this Saturday, May 29 from 9:00 - 10:30 am. For more details, you can read their family blog: http://tinkerbellwantabe-family-mega...for-wachs.html You can also donate to this family at any America First Credit Union.

Facebook Community Page HERE
We need your support! ***Please forward this to whomever you know will pray or may be a support for our family. It's also helpful for anyone that has experienced this to help us remember these are baby steps.*** Here's the background... for more updates, go to the facebook page listed at the top. My brother, Kyle was long boarding down Sunset (this was spur of the moment - he usually uses his helmet) in East Layton, UT, and hit a bump and lost control- he was able to gain control again, but then lost control again and fell. He landed on the back of his head and slid and got some pretty bad scrapes on his back. Kyle's good friend (like a brother) Mike, was following him and was able to call 911 on the spot. My dad was in the neighborhood at the time and got a call from someone that knew him so he could come right away. He ended up basically following the ambulance to the accident location. At the accident site, Kyle was typical, good old' Kyle! When the ambulance arrived he physically fought three men trying to get him on the stretcher and into the neck brace! Right after they put the neck brace on him He started yelling at them and said something like "Come on guys, don't you know this thing is choking me?!?!" They were finally able to get him on the stretcher- we think through sedation! GO KYLE! Kyle came into the hospital with two scores for the severity of his injury. On a scale of 3-15, 3 being dead and 15 being good, he received a score of 8 initially and later when he arrived at the hospital he was given a score of 6. His injuries include at least 10+ fractures to the skull (they stopped counting at 10), his right ear got a blow(don't remember the medical terms for body part) and he possibly will lose his hearing in that ear. The fracture to the skull was like a crack of an egg- worse in the back of his head where he hit and fractures/breaks dissipating to both sides of his head. He had some blood on his brain in the beginning, but not enough to be worried about. Later on, his brain was swelling too much for comfort, so they decided to go straight into surgery to remove part of his skull. The Surgery lasted a little over 3 hours. They completely removed both the right and left side of his skull. With what they removed, they took out 3-5 broken pieces on both sides. They will be able to plate it together and plan to put it back in 2-3 weeks when his brain swelling has had a chance to go down. After doing this surgery his chances of survival went from 15-20% to 80-85%. The Surgeon seemed to think that the results of the surgery is pretty promising! As far as brain damage, we will not know anything till he starts coming out of coma. We do not know exactly when that will happen. It could be 2-3+ weeks when they put his skull back or it could be longer. The best thing now is just continued prayers! We will try to keep you updated as much as we can! In the meantime, we know Kyle would love visitors. You cannot go back to see him, but we have a book that you can sign and write encouraging notes to Kyle. Kyle is a very positive person and would love and appreciate as much positive support and words of encouragement! Kyle would want you all to know something like this: "Hey kids, you know I can be pretty cracked up sometimes and like to have a lotta fun in life...I'm an awesome long boarder and I bet it was an awesome fall...but I sure wish someone could have tapped me fighting off all those wimpy guys!...I bet it was a pretty sick fight!!...You know I'll be okay with whatever happens, so just keep ridin' and goin' and keep me in your prayers cuz it's gonna be a crazy fun ride for me! ...oh...and if you crazy kids get a chance, sign your name on the line in that book and say something nice about me, cuz you know you love me!" Kyle is not able to say it, but we know he would appreciate your continued prayers and support! If you are able, feel free to come sign his book. We are hoping to keep it in the ICU waiting room on the second floor of McKay Dee Hospital. It has a green sign with his name by it, and should be on the table kind of behind the fish tank. If you catch his parents, give them a hug and laugh in his honor and try to remember to sign the book! We'd all appreciate it! Thanks again for all your love, prayers and support! With love, the Johnson's ***I know I will get some rallying here, but I'd really appreciate it even more if you could post on facebook (if you have an account), so my family and friends can feel the expressions of concern and prayers from all around. God bless. ***

This is VERY late notice but I just got all of the details about this today:
The local chapter of NILMDTS is having a silent auction fundraiser tonight at 6:30 at Millenial Falls, 12375 South 1300 East in Draper. Here is some information about the organization: Pregnancy and birth are miraculous journeys. This amazing time of life is full of mystery, anticipation, joy, hope, and wonder. Feeling the powerful energy of birth and new life, watching as a new family is born unto each other. These things humble and amaze. These are the things that we celebrate when a baby is born. But there is another aspect of pregnancy and birth. There is an unexpected place in this journey where some families may find themselves. When a baby dies, a world is turned upside down. There is confusion, sadness, fear, and uncertainty that cannot be explained. There is sorrow where there should have been joy. During this time, it might be impossible for families to know what they might need in order to heal in the future. This is the place where the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation gently provides a helping hand and a healing heart. For families overcome by grief and pain, the idea of photographing their baby may not immediately occur to them. Offering gentle and beautiful photography services in a compassionate and sensitive manner is the heart of this organization. The soft, gentle heirloom photographs of these beautiful babies are an important part of the healing process. They allow families to honor and cherish their babies, and share the spirits of their lives. The NILMDTS mission statement is to introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the gift of professional portraiture. We believe these images serve as an important step in the family's healing process by honoring their child's legacy. The Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep Foundation (NILMDTS) administers a network of more than 7,000 volunteer photographers in the United States and 25 countries. At a family's request, a NILMDTS Affiliated Photographer will come to your hospital or hospice location and conduct a sensitive and private portrait session. The portraits are then professionally retouched and presented to the families on an archival DVD or CD that can be used to print portraits of their cherished baby. Our entire network of affiliated photographers graciously donate their time and talents to our families and we are proud to be able to offer our services at no cost. Your Donations are greatly needed and greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Angioma Alliance 5k Run/Walk!
The race will be held at the Marquardt Park, the upper bowry of the Mt. Ogden Park, on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at 8:30am. The race will include a breathtaking run/walk through the trails of Ogden, Utah. The event will hopefully open the public's eyes to a condition we have become intimately familiar with. An angioma (cavernoma) is a tumorous vascular malformation in the brain, affecting 1 in 200-300 people. I was diagnosed at the age of 29, when mine led to seizures after multiple bleeds. I will be having brain surgery within weeks after the race, to remove the angioma, as that is the only available method of treatment at this time. Hopefully research will lead to better treatments, and eventually a cure. All proceeds will benefit Angioma Alliance. We are expecting a large turn-out but we are still recruiting sponsors and donors. If you are interested in donating please contact us at angiomaawareness@hotmail.com. The registration fee includes a shirt, refreshments after the race as well as prizes and a raffle. The race will also include a team division. Teams may register with 4 to 6 members and finishing times will be calculated based on the best 4 times. Prices: Individual Run/Walk with t-shirt: $15.00 Individual Run/Walk with Tek running shirt: $20.00 Team Run with Tek running shirt: $16.00 To read more about my story and others who have been affected by cavernous angiomas, or for more information on how to register for the race please visit my blog: angiomaalliance5k.blogspot.com Thanks!!!! As some of you are aware, I have two special needs children. One has Prader-Willi Syndrome which makes life quite interesting. They have an insatiable appetite and there is nothing to control it. They are looking for food every minute they are awake. You have to lock your cupboards and fridge to keep them out. There also many other problems associated with this syndrome.
Anyway, right now APX Alarm Company is doing a give back contest and the Utah Prader-Willi Association is in the lead right now with only 7 more days of voting. If we win over the other organizations, we would win $100,000 dollars. We are in the process of developing software to help family and caregivers be able to find help with these problems. If we won the money, we could get the software develop faster. We are only 1200 votes ahead of the next organization. It is very easy and should only take about 30 seconds of your time. Log onto your Facebook account and search for APX alarm. Then click on the APX Gives Back tab on the top. Click on like and then allow. Click on the start voting button... and then select the Mountain region button. Click on the Utah Prader-Willi Syndrome Association button and that is it. If you have a few more seconds, click on the Pacific region button and vote for the Prader-Willi California Foundation. After you have voted, search for Utah Prader-Willi, click like and then just write, "I voted" and click share. You can vote once a day and get an entry for each time you vote. You will be notified by Facebook if you are the winner on August 23, 2010. Please pass this on to all of your friends and family. It is equivalent to 6 years of fund raising for the Utah group. 30 seconds of your time for the next 7 days could really help us out. Thanks, Lori |
