Has the last year of being stuck inside of our homes turn you into a new houseplant enthusiast? You’re not the only one! Nurseries and plant sellers reported their sales jumping from 15-20 sales per day to 200+ sales per day throughout the last 12 months! There are even now plant owners that have blown up in popularity on Instagram and TikTok.

If you are one of the people placing these orders for new houseplants, you may still need some tips and tricks for growing houseplants. I know, I for instance, can grow aloe amazingly, but I really struggle with some other houseplants.

5 Tips for Growing Houseplants

Check the Plants Safety

Here’s the reality. Houseplants can be very dangerous and even deadly to pets or children. Preferably before buying these plants, you need to check out whether or not your plants are poisonous. Pets and small children can get hold of plants lightning quick, and it’s best to not have them in the home.

Keep the Tag

If your plant came with a tag, be sure and keep it so that you know what the plant is. Those tags often include care instructions, which means that with care instructions on hand, you’ll always know how to care for the plant.

Make Sure You Are Ready for the Commitment

Okay, so it’s not a child or a pet, but let’s be honest. Plants require commitment. Some of them require serious commitment. They need more than occasional watering. Even a short vacation will require you to set up a plant-sitter so that they can be watered while you are gone.

Find Drought Resistant Plants

Drought resistant plants are important, especially if you live in the Western side of the USA that is suffering severe drought conditions. Additionally, these plants are easier to care for.

Buy from a Sustainable Grower

Find a store or nursery that grows pesticide free plants, one that uses natural fertilizers and one that uses recycled products in their packaging. You’ll feel better about your purchase.
