How to Save on Halloween Costumes

I know we just talked about Halloween yesterday, so I figured we can chat about a couple more ways that we can save money on one of the most expensive holidays there are!  Did you know that the average family spends $100 or more on Halloween candy, costumes and decorations? I don’t know about you, but I still see $100 as being a lot of money.  A lot of money that can be used elsewhere. So, I am doing my best to get those numbers down, my friends! Get them down so low that you can completely enjoy Halloween without that ever lurking stressful feeling of having spent too much money.

Here are some of my favorite tips on how to save on Halloween costumes:

  • Watch this website closely.  Just like with the Halloween candy, we will be posting any awesome costume deals we find, so don’t miss out.
  • Start shopping early.  Get an early start to find the best deals.  This is especially true when you shop online.
  • Shop second hand.  You can buy costumes for pennies on the dollar, by shopping at thrift stores.  Some people have issues using second hand stuff, but really all you need to do is wash it up and it is as good new.  I almost always buy our costumes from Goodwill and it always works out great. Another good thing about Goodwill specifically, is that they actually sell quite a few brand new costumes at much cheaper than retail.
  • Make your own.  If you are crafty at all, check out Pinterest and find thousands of Halloween costume ideas that you can make on your own.  Be sure to choose a budget-friendly one and not one that is going to costs hundreds of dollars worth of materials.

What are your favorite ways to stock up and save on Halloween costumes?  Have you ever made your own? I would love to see examples.
