Shelf Reliance – National Safety Month

If you ask Google, it turns out there are all kinds of things to celebrate in June. June has been declared Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, National Accordion Awareness Month, National Pest Control Month, and National Papaya Month. There are also holidays belonging to individual days. It’s June 11th — why not throw a little party in honor of National Hug Holiday? Come Sunday, you can drop some utensils and burn something on the stovetop; it’s Kitchen Klutzes of America Day, after all (anyone else think this holiday was invented just for them?).

Who comes up with these special holidays? There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the process, and I doubt that these celebrations are “official” in a legal or cultural sense; they’re sponsored by companies, industries, clubs, or various other groups.

One such group is the National Safety Council. According to their website, “Each June, the National Safety Council encourages businesses to get involved and participate in National Safety Month. Each week carries a theme that brings attention to critical safety issues.”

For 2010, the National Safety Council has decided to focus on the following safety issues:

Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention
Teen Driving Safety
Preventing Overexertion at Work and Home
Dangers of Cell Phone Use While Driving
Summer Safety

Each safety focus features several helpful links, so do yourself a favor while surfing the web: learn a little more about how to keep yourself and loved ones protected. While you’re at it, check out Shelf Reliance’s article, Emergency Kit Essentials. You can get the whole family involved in personal preparedness and safety by assembling an emergency kit that’s tailor-made for your needs.

Stay safe out there! Remember to think Shelf Reliance when it’s time for emergency planning and safety.
