Homemade Chicken Stock

I bought a 40 lb box of Zaycon chicken last week. I always have about 6 lbs or so of fat and other stuff I trim off. Did you know that instead of throwing it away you can use those trimmings to make your own chicken stock? Here is how I do it.

Put your chicken fat/bones/trimmings in a crockpot filled with water. Add the following ingredients:

2 peeled carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 stalk celery, cut into 2-inch pieces
1 yellow onion, cut into quarters
5 sprigs fresh parsley
1 clove garlic
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Cook all day. Your house will smell great! After cooking you can see that the broth looks fantastic.

At this point, just strain out all the chicken trimmings and other items and discard. Put the broth in freezer safe containers for up to 6 months. I was able to get 14 cups of broth out of my 7 qt crockpot the other day. Try it you will never go back to store bought.

  1. Could you put this in freezer bags?

  2. I am sure you could. I usually use plastic or glass containers myself, though.
