So, you want to lose weight and get in shape, but you are hesitant to spend what seems like a fortune in joining the gym? There are options for you to exercise without the gym membership.
Home Workout DVDs
It may seem silly, but you absolutely can get fit while using exercise DVDs. It doesn’t matter if you break out the old Richards Simmons Sweating with the Oldies dvd, as long as you are moving, you are getting healthy! You can buy many different workout DVDs for around $5 each or check local yard sales and thrift shops for even cheaper deals!
YouTube
YouTube is such an amazing resource for so many things and exercise is one of them. You can watch YouTube videos on weightlifting, aerobics, Pilates, Yoga and just about any other exercise form you can think of. Set up your laptop and turn up the sound and get busy working out. Lets face it, you are going to pay for internet service anyway, you may as well use it to your advantage.
Go for a Walk
The easiest workout of all is to go for a walk. Take a nice stroll around your neighborhood or find your local high school track and take a couple of laps. Nothing beats a workout with fresh air! This one is free!
Take a Hike
Hiking is a great way to explore the places that are around you and get exercise at the same time! You likely have multiple hiking trails near you to take advantage of. Be safe though, pack water and safety gear with you and don’t go off of trails!
Skip on the Brand New Workout Equipment
Do not rush out and spend hundreds or thousands on exercise equipment. Too many people do this and end up not liking it or not using it. Scan Craigslist, for sale sites and yard sales for used exercise equipment such as treadmills and bikes. You will save possibly thousands of dollars this way.
Join a League Team
What is your favorite sport? Is it softball, basketball or maybe volleyball? Whatever it is, do a little research to find out if there are any league sports in your area. Join one of these teams to play several times per week. This is great exercise and a lot of fun! And it is much less expensive than a monthly gym membership fee.
Next to Christmas, Halloween is hands down my favorite holiday to spend with my kids. They get so excited to dress up and go trick or treating that it just brings me so much joy. Do you know what doesn’t bring me joy? The idea that the average person spends upwards of $50 each year on Halloween. That is per person, not per household. We have 5 people in our family. Do you think I am willing to spend $250 on Halloween? Nope, no way.
One of the easiest ways to cut your Halloween expenses is to spend less on your costume. How to do that, you ask? Well here are a couple of tips for you to save big on your costume for Halloween this year.
Search The Toy Box –
Before you head out shopping for costumes for your kids, be sure to look through their toy boxes. Many kids have costume worthy accessories buried in their toys. My son has capes and masks from his favorite superheroes as well as toy swords and light sabers that could easily be costume pieces.
Costume Exchange –
Get together with friends and exchange costumes. No one wants to wear the same costume over and over again, you may as well exchange your costume with friends who have extras laying around too.
Skip the Costume –
This is a super easy way to save. Instead of buying a complete costume, just buy several accent pieces that relate to what you want to be and match it up to something you already own. Example:
Go Thrift Shopping –
A shopping trip at your local thrift store is a great way to save big on costumes. Most people only wear their costumes once, you may as well buy one second hand to save yourself some money. (I make it a rule to only buy washable costumes used that way I know that they are clean.)
School is starting and for some kids that can be scary. New classes, new friends, and new teachers can make kids feel a little nervous. Having a fun first day can calm those nerves and hopefully help kids feel excited about this new year.
The first day of school can set the stage for the year. Here are a few fun and easy first day of school activities that you can do. Maybe you can make them into a tradition and have your kids look forward to many more first days.
Back to School Breakfast- Think of your kids favorite breakfast and make that for the first day. You can even add some special desserts like donuts, waffles with whip cream or sprinkles and pancakes. Start the day out right with something special for your kids. You can even decorate their chairs.
Decorate your car or bikes- If you drive your kids to school, have them decorate the car the night before with their names and grades. Put balloons inside and play fun music as you drive. Keeping upbeat and positive will help with calming nerves. If you walk/bike to school, decorate their bikes with crepe paper.
First Day of School Banner- Make a big banner out of butcher paper that says something like “First Day of School Rocks” or “This Year will be Awesome.” Then when the kids are coming home hold it up on both ends and have them run through it. Make it like the football teams do when they run through their banners at games.
School Goals- Sit down with your kids after their first day and write down some goals they want to achieve this year. Hang up their goals in their room, on the fridge, or another visual spot. This will help the kids have a direction to go this year and hopefully learn something new. Some ideas- Make a new friend in class, learn how to play a musical instrument, read at a higher wpm goal, complete homework right after school.
Dinner Picnic at the School- For dinner, pack a picnic for the family and go to the school. Sit and eat on the school grounds and talk about the first day of school. Have the kids show you where they play and what they liked about their first day. This would be a good time to talk about their goals as well. Sitting and talking as a family at the school can make the school areas feel more comfortable.
Hopefully these traditions can help your kids start this year out right!
I’ve been tossing around the idea of whether or not to write a post concerning the recent CVS coupon policy changes. Although they’ve officially updated their coupon policy, it doesn’t really seem like they made any major or notable changes. For the most part, it looks like some parts of the policy have just been reworded to be a little clearer.
No matter—a coupon policy change is a coupon policy change, right? You can take a look at the new official CVS coupon policy HERE, but I’m also going to highlight some of the changes for you…
As stated before, several policies were simply rephrased. Here are some of the rephrased sections of the CVS coupon policy…
Old Policy: Coupons cannot be exchanged for cash or gift cards.
New Policy: Extrabucks or coupons cannot be used on cash or gift cards.
Old Policy: CVS does not accept expired coupons.
New Policy: Coupons must be used on or before the expiration date (including CVS coupons).
Old Policy: CVS will not accept third party manufacturers’ coupons with another retailer’s logo.
New Policy: No mention of this restriction in the new CVS coupon policy.
Old Policy: The total value of the coupons may not exceed the value of the transaction.
New Policy: Coupons greater than the value of a product will be adjusted down. (For instance, if you use a $5.00 coupon on an item priced at $4.99, the value of the coupon will be adjusted to $4.99.)
Old Policy: CVS accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable CVS coupon(s) per item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.
New Policy: CVS accepts one item-, brand-, or category-specific CVS Pharmacy coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon per qualifying item unless prohibited by either coupon.
As you can see, there’s really nothing earth shattering about the new CVS coupon policy update. Many of the changes are simply clarifications of things that were generally known or accepted before the change.
The only changes that I see that may effect how we shop at CVS is the last one. Before, we used to be able to use more than one CVS coupon and one manufacturer coupon on an item. For instance, if the red coupon machine printed a coupon for $1.00 off a certain brand toothbrush, we could also use an oral care threshold CVS coupon and a manufacturer with this. With the clarification in the new policy, I doubt we’ll be able to do this anymore. However, I haven’t been to CVS in a little while, and I have yet to test this theory.
There are certain times of the year that are better to purchase specific items to save the most money. You’re more likely to find these items on sale or in the clearance section. Hopefully this guideline will give you somewhat of an idea of when to buy specific items.
January – Christmas Decorations, bedding, toys, small appliances, carpet, home improvement stuff, exercise stuff
February – Winter Clothing, jewlery, furniture, Valentines Day clearance, tv’s, bikes
March – Gardening supplies, AC units, winter items, snow blowers, golf clubs, luggage, wedding gifts
April – wedding dress, cruises, vacuums
May – Party supplies, sports apparel
June – Father’s Day gifts, camping gear, tv’s, tools, gym, boxed gift sets
July – School Supplies, summer clothing clearance items, summer toys, furniture
August – Back to school deals, school supplies, swimsuits, grills, pool toys, lunch food items
September – garden items, lawn mowers, winter clothing, Halloween costumes, holiday travel (airfare)
October – cars, patio furniture, appliances, toys, baking goods
November- appliances, electronics, toys, tv’s
December – wrapping paper appliances, holiday gifts, Christmas cards
Keep your eye on the clearance departments. You should also be able to find some great deals on holiday decor and items after the holiday has pasted (Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, etc). They’ll usually start at 30% off and go up from there. Each store is different but typically you’ll find then 50% off, 75% off and even 90% off. Plus don’t forget you can usually use coupons on top of discounts and clearance items so always double check for one.
Are you planning a party for the end of Summer? Labor day is coming up after all. Or are you thinking ahead to the holidays?
The thing about parties is that they only last for so long. Sure you want to decorate and make it look awesome, but do you really want to stretch your budget on decorations that you are just going to be throwing away the next day? Even if you save it, it’s going to be stored for another year. I hate spending a lot of money on one time use items. I literally hate it, so I refuse to do it.
Here are the alternatives I have found that help me to save on party supplies and decor:
Shop at the dollar store
Most of us have a dollar store of some kind nearby and these are a great place to find decorations for your party! They have streamers and balloons, sure, but they also have so many other options for you.
Use what you already have
Most of us have decorating items throughout our house and we don’t even realize it. For example, a while back my son wanted a car themed birthday party and I was thinking I would need to spend big for decorations, but then it hit me. He is the owner of about 100 (probably more) Hot Wheels cars. I used these as centerpiece decorations (the trucks on a bed of rocks were a big hit) and bought one brand new Hot Wheels car ($0.97 at Walmart) for a cake decoration. This car party was a success and I literally spend less than $1 on a decor.
Shop Clearance
If you have room to store party supplies in your house, then I highly suggest shopping the clearance racks after a holiday and at the end of seasons. You can get some rock bottom prices on decorative items such as streamers, paper plates and more.
p.s. Did you know that the Dollar Tree has clearance? I was in a couple weeks ago and saw 4th of July decor marked down to 4 for $1! Now that is worth buying now and saving until next year! I typically store these kinds of items with my gift closet stuff. Whenever a birthday or a holiday comes along, I know just where to look.
What do you do for entertainment in your home? Do you use cable or satellite TV? How much do you pay? I’m guessing you would prefer not to answer that question, because the fact it, it’s expensive! The average cable bill right now is around $100 per month. $100!!! That is $1200 per year that is being spent just to watch TV.
The easy way out of this bill is to simply cut out television all together, but we all know how difficult that can be. So one easy solution is to choose a streaming service to watch your television shows and movies on.
Here is a list of the different streaming services you can use to save big on your cable expenses:
Sling TV – I will start out this list with the most expensive streaming option. Sling TV runs about $20 per month, but you can stream LIVE TV on some of the most popular networks such as HGTV, AMC (Walking Dead fans will love this!) and Lifetime.
Netflix – I know that most of you are familiar with this one, but for less than $10 per month you can have access to thousands of movies and television shows. Netflix also recently started producing their own shows! So much stuff to watch! Netflix offers a free one month trial for new customers.
Amazon Prime – Amazon Prime is similar to Netflix in that there are thousands of movies and television shows that Prime members can stream for free on Amazon Instant Video. Amazon has also gotten into the production game of creating their own shows, which have been a ratings hit for them (Transparent, Alpha House, etc). Amazon Prime is paid for yearly and costs $99, so less than $9 per month and new customers can sign up for a free one month trial.
Hulu – Hulu allows you to watch current shows on network television for under $10 a month. You typically have to wait a day or two after the show airs to watch it. Not all networks are on Hulu though, so do your research before signing up to be sure you will get the shows you want.
Having a new baby is many things from scary, to exciting to a total blast, but one thing it doesn’t have to be is expensive. Many people will tell you that you have to have thousands of dollars to prepare for a baby and aside from your medical expenses, this is simply untrue. There are things that you can do to prepare for a baby that doesn’t stretch your budget!
Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when you are expecting.
Have a Shower – If someone is offering to throw you a baby shower, definitely say yes. People love shopping for baby stuff, so let them. That is that much less stuff that you have to buy. Plus, they are fun!!
Wait For Baby – Yep, this is one of the most simple things you can do to save. The fact of the matter is, you don’t need to have every little thing before the baby is born, so don’t splurge on it all before the baby arrives. Don’t let the stores and all the ads convince you that you need it all, because you don’t. Wait until your little one is here and then decide what you need and what you want.
Here are the things you will need before the baby arrives:
Shop Sales – Just like any other shopping you do, make sure you hit the sales, especially the clearance sales! The fact is, babies are babies for only so long and they grow quickly. Don’t pay full price for something that is literally only going to be worn a handful of times.
Borrow from Friends or Family – Do you know anyone who has young children? They likely have clothes and gear that they aren’t using. See if you can borrow this stuff from them to save you from buying it all together. Remember when we talked about how quickly babies grow? Most gear isn’t used long at all.
Sign up for WIC – WIC is a great resource for food and formula for young children and mothers. You would be surprised at the income guidelines too, so if you are needing formula, they are a great resource.
Most of us have expenses in our lives that interfere with our budgets. Do you know where your budget leaks are?
Many budget leaks spring from the same areas. Here are 10 ways to reign in those budget leaks and save yourself at least $500 by the end of the year.
Okay, are you guys gearing up for another school year? One big expense, if you are in college, are the textbooks! Each book can be nearly $100, which adds up so quickly. So, to save some money, be sure you aren’t paying full price on your textbooks. Here are two simple ways you can actually rent your books and then just return them when you’re done. This way you only pay a fraction of the price!
At Chegg, you can save up to 90% on Textbooks. Besides the money that you will be saving, here are a few other awesome benefits:
On Amazon you can save up to 80% on Textbooks. If you have an Amazon prime membership you may want to start here. You can sign up for Amazon Student and get FREE Two-Day Shipping for six months with Amazon Prime shipping benefits, as well as exclusive offers via e-mail.
Amazon offers FREE Returns- After your 30 day rental you can either extend or return the book. If you return you can do that for FREE.

Back-to-school time is always such a huge flurry of activity, and, usually quite an expensive time of year! With all of the clothes, shoes, school supplies, and backpacks you need to buy, you can easily drop a ton of money in just a very short period of time. I’ve found that the shoes are usually one of the areas that I’m willing to splurge on. But, of course, sometimes life just throws us a curve ball or two, and the purse strings only allow for some cheap back to school shoes.
Although cheap back to school shoes don’t typically hold up as well as the more expensive brands, you can get quite a bit of wear out of them during the school year before they need replaced. With proper care, you might even be able to make cheap school shoes last all year!
Here are a few tested tips to help you get away with some cheap school shoes…
Like pretty much everything else, different brands of cheap shoes are…well, different. Some hold up well, and others fall apart in no time at all. Before you buy a pair of cheap sneakers for the kiddos for school, take a little time to compare different brands and look into reviews. You’ll probably find that some cheap shoes have excellent reviews, despite being inexpensive.
Play shoes! Play shoes! Play shoes! I can’t stress the importance of play shoes, especially if you’re trying to get away with some cheap back to school shoes. Keep old shoes that still fit and are in generally good condition. Make sure the kids change out of their new school shoes and into their play shoes as soon as they get home! If all of your kids’ old shoes are too small or completely shredded, you can always hit up the thrift store for some super cheap play shoes! In fact, you may even luck out and find some gently used high quality shoes there as well!
The fastest way to wear out cheap back to school shoes is have the kids wear them every single day. If possible, purchase a couple of pairs of cheap shoes and rotate them. Have them wear one pair one day and another pair the next day. This gives the shoes a little rest from time to time and prevents them from wearing out too quickly.
Dirt and gunk accumulating on the outside of shoes is just going to make them wear out so much faster. Of course, it can be hard to keep kids out of dirt piles and mud puddles, so you’ll most likely need to clean their school shoes from time to time. Avoid tossing them in the washer, though, since this can be super hard on shoes, especially cheaper shoes! Instead, use a soft cloth or brush to wipe the outside of the shoes when they get dirty. It will keep them looking new and prolong their life.
I completely understand the need for cheap school shoes sometimes, especially if you have several children. But, I also can’t stress the importance of high quality shoes for school. They typically last much longer, making them a better investment. If you have to, purchase cheap shoes for the first few weeks or months of school, but also try to save up enough money for some higher quality shoes. Keep your eye on sales too, since you can sometimes score some awesome deals on quality shoes once the back to school frenzy has come and gone!
End of Summer yard sales are always my favorite. People are out and about and longing for the days to stretch out a little longer before heading back to the shuffle of Fall schedules, so browsing through yard sales is a great way to spend the time.
I know a lot of people also do some of their school shopping at yard sales in hopes of finding good clothes on a budget. I know I have done it and yes, I found some AMAZING deals! (Miss Me jeans for $5? Yes, please!)
Find the Right Location
Are you on a busy street? Are you near a high traffic part of town? That is the type of location that you want to be in. Many people don’t want to drive way out of their way to go to a yard sale since there are no guarantees. If this doesn’t sound like your location, see if you have family that wouldn’t mind if you set up your sale at their location.
Make it a Team Effort
Block and multi family sales are everyone’s favorites. Get your friends, families and neighbors on board with you and have the busiest yard sale in town! Yard sale shoppers love the idea that there are multiples families to shop from since that increases the chances of a great find!
Bold Advertising
If you don’t advertise, no one will even know you are having a sale. Make sure you advertise and advertise well. Create big, bold signs and put your yard sale ad online on such sites as Facebook and Craigslist. Also, don’t discount your local newspaper. There are still some people who check the paper for yard sales and some papers let you place a free yard sale ad.
Organize
Be sure that your stuff is organized as well as possible. Most people, myself included, will simply drive right by when there are piles of stuff just laying around someone’s yard.
Price Accordingly and Clearly
Yes, you want to make as much money as possible, but don’t be greedy. Yard sales are great for sellers so that they can get rid of clutter and bring in a little bit of money. They are great for shoppers to be able to find great deals and things that they need. People don’t shop yard sales to pay top dollar, make sure you price your items according to their worth and not what they sell for new. Also, be sure to clearly mark how much the item is.
If you are anything like me, you long to live clutter free. If you are anything like me though, that is easier said than done. Between all of the kids stuff, sports gear, work stuff and our every day items, it feels like it is impossible to not have clutter. I know it’s possible though.
I have a friend who has just as many kids as me and I have never seen anything on her floors or counters. I’m not kidding, not one thing.
So how can you do it? How can you become a clutter free (or at least less cluttered) household? It can be done, I promise you!
Here are 5 tips to living clutter free that you can implement immediately that will make a huge difference in your life.
Put usefulness above emotion. Think about the clutter that is filling your home. Go through items individually and question whether or not it is useful. You should not have things in your home simply because of an emotional connection. It is easy to become overwhelmed with items that you get attached to. Make sure the items that are in your home are useful to improving your life.
Do not strive to “Keep up with the Jones.” Do not focus your life on material things simply because you feel like everyone else has them. Do you need 12 bluetooth speakers in your house? Chances are you do not.The same thing can be true for just about everything.
Don’t be seduced by pretty organizers. There are some stores out there that are great for storage containers. I mean who doesn’t want to have gorgeous storage containers from IKEA prettying up their home. The thing is, just stacking box upon box doesn’t help deal with the clutter issue, it just presents it a little better. The fact is that you need to get rid of stuff and then organize.
Give you stuff to charity or a family in need. Do you have way too many blankets overflowing your hall closet? Take some of them down to the local shelter and donate them to someone in need. It will feel good knowing that clearing out your clutter is helping someone.
Pretend you are moving. Let’s do an experiment. Pretend you had to uproot and move your household. What would you need to take with you? What would you prefer you didn’t lug along on the trip. It’s a good rule of thumb to never clutter your house with items you wouldn’t want to bring to the next place.
