Okay, there is simply no sugar coating it. My house was flat cold this morning when I woke up. While I did wish I had slept with a heavier blanket, I was so excited! I love when the chill hits the air because that means it’s time for me to decorate for fall! My husband is not a fan of me decorating for fall when it’s still hot outside so I like to wait and now it’s time.
I have a great selection of fall décor from year’s past, but I am wanting to add a little bit of new stuff this year, so that means it’s time to go shopping. I’ve been decorating my own home for decades now so I’m familiar with the best places to find deals on fall décor and thought I would share those with you here.
Here are all of the best places I have found to find deals on fall décor:
Amazon is a place to find just about everything and if you don’t love shopping in store these days, it’s a great option.
I love shopping at Dollar Tree for fall décor. Much of my fall décor involves fake flowers and foliage and the dollar store is the cheapest places to find this type of stuff! I use it for wreaths, for shelf décor and I also use it to add to clear vases with battery operated lights.
I love FB Marketplace. It’s a great place to find super great deals on décor that people are wanting to get rid of.
While on FB be sure to check out your local BuyNothing groups and you can likely find great stuff for free! BuyNothing Groups are awesome for finding great stuff for your home like décor, furniture and more.
Check out your local charity or thrift shops for some seriously great deals on fall decor items. In my local community we have multiple thrift shops, one of which is often extremely cheap. I love finding treasures here!
Where do you like to find your fall decor deals?
My kids are so hungry when they get home from school. If they don’t eat a snack pretty quickly after they get home, I have some really hangry kids on my hands. Thinking of new snacks to have for the kids is the worst, so take this list and you won’t have to stress! Here are some super easy and healthy snacks that your kids (and you!) will enjoy.

We love family movie nights! That means we tend to buy a lot of our favorites when I find them on sale. With that I started to realize we were running out of room but even after clearing out the ones we don’t watch anymore, it still wasn’t enough space. So I decided to make the switch and take all my DVD’s out of their cases and use DVD sleeves!
At one point I had all our DVD’s in the closet close to our family room but after some rearranging, that became our area for family games and blankets. So the DVD’s moved to the TV console which worked well, until we accumulated to many DVD’s from garage sales, Amazon deals and Christmas gifts. So I started racking my brain on how to save space. First I thought a CD case would be perfect. We can have a CD case for the different categories of DVDs we have from kids movies, family friendly, Disney, etc. But then I realized that would mean I’m throwing away the movie covers or having to store them in another space and I didn’t want to do that. My goal was to keep the covers with each of the discs.
So I found these DVD sleeves and realized how perfect they were. I could keep the movie covers with the discs and not have to throw them away. You might ask why I want to keep the movie covers so let me explain. In the end I really want all my movies digital but we don’t have the funding to transfer them all right now. About once a month I’ll try to add a couple of our favorites to our Vudu account using their Disc to Digital feature. This requires me to scan the bar code on the back of the covers and cost $2 per movie. I love this features but note, it doesn’t work on all movies so those ones we’ll hold on so we still have access to them.
To get started you’ll want to first go through all your movies and clear out the ones you no longer watch. As yourself, have we watched this movie in the last 2 years? If not think about possibly letting it go. Donate to GoodWill or offer it to a friend or family member. Once you’ve done this you’ll know exactly how many sleeves you’ll need.
Once you have your sleeves it’s time to start switching them over. You’ll pull the cover out of the case and fold it. I liked to have the title (along the spine) on the same side as the front cover so I folded each cover along that same line. (as pictured above) Place that inside the sleeve. Then you’ll add your discs to the insert provided and place them inside. That’s it.
Now I know this might sounds weird to some of you but I struggled to get rid of the cases. I have to remind myself I’m clearing up space and it’s worth it to part with the cases. You can donate them but I found it best just to toss them into a garbage bag and get them out of the house. Remember, DVD’s don’t have a great resale value (exactly why we can find such great deals on them) so you don’t need to worry about holding onto the cases for resale, in my eyes it’s not worth the space it takes up in my home.
Now you just need a great home for them all. Storage bins are perfect, we just placed our right back into the tv console drawers where they’re still sorted into categories so the kids can easily find the movie they’re looking for! This has definitely been one of my favorite transformations in our home. I hope you enjoy all the free space you clean up!
** These DVD Sleeves are on sale right now on Amazon – I paid full price for them so if you want to make the switch, grab your sleeves NOW!
Summer is full of money spending opportunities. Between vacations and keeping the kids busy all summer long, you may be thinking “wow, I spent a lot of money this summer.” The reality is though fall is expensive! Maybe even more expensive than summer.
The kids are back in school, which means school related expenses are ramped back up. Extracurriculars start happening again and those expenses can be amped up really quick. Oh, and let’s not forget about those energy bills moving on up with the drop in temperature.
The fall months can get busy and it is easy to talk ourselves into ordering dinner, especially when we are getting home late and feel like we don’t have time to cook. If you plan and prepare in advance, it is easy to pop dinner in the oven or slow cooker in the morning.
If you just have to have new sweater weather clothing, hit up the thrift shop instead of the mall. Of course to really save money, you should avoid shopping for new clothes, but sometimes fall calls for a new sweater, right?
So many of us are rushing out to buy Pumpkin Spice Lattes for the fall season, but the prices add up quickly! Try your best to cut down on these coffee treats to just once a week or less and when you are having those cravings, you should be make yourself some at home.
Christmas is just a few short months away. Now is the time to set up a spending budget for those holiday gifts, decor and anything else.
Apple orchards, fall foliage searches, pumpkin patches….the list of free and cheap activities in the fall goes on and on. You can find many fun things to do that won’t break the bank.
YUM! I love peach season. Recently we got a lot of peaches from my friends’ home. They are SO good, but I need to do something with them before they go bad. Cobbler recipes are so yummy and perfect for a September evening. Check out this recipe.

Never before have we been as focused on our health as we collectively are now. Since fall is returning soon and many kids are back in school and many of us are back in the office, it’s time to get our immune system strong. These tips that will help you boost your health this fall are easy and inexpensive to do and have the potential to help you stay healthy during the cold and flu (and whatever else) season.
All of these tips below, I have personally done and they seem to help me stay healthy. For instance, my entire family had a nasty head and respiratory bug a few weeks ago and I stayed healthy the whole time!
4 Tips that Will Help You Boost Your Health this Fall
Sinus Rinse
Sinus rinses are great for washing away all of the yucky stuff that collects in our nose throughout the day. They aren’t a ton of fun, but I have had sinus health issues since I was young and about a year ago I started doing them daily and I feel great with them.
Exercise
Exercising helps to keep us healthy overall, but it also helps to boost our immune system!
Drink Lots of Water
Hydration is one of the greatest things that we can do for our bodies! It helps our brain function, our physical performance, it helps to keep your digestive system in order and all of these things can benefit our immune systems.
Sleep
Sleep is the single most important thing that we can do for our immune system. You need sleep to reset each day and to allow your body to regenerate each and every day which includes boosting our immune system.
What is your favorite way to keep yourself healthy during cold and flu season?
It’s not enough to have a home alarm anymore and unfortunately property crime is on the rise. Lucky for us though, there are quite a few super cool products out there that will help to prevent theft and break ins.
Many of these items connect to your phone so that you can be alerted of an issue even if you are away from home. I can personally vouch for the following items and how they have worked for me. Unfortunately, in my community there have been multiple break ins lately and we wanted to make sure that our home wasn’t on the list of those that got broken into.
These are the items that I have personally used and have found to be useful in protecting my home. While I can’t say that they have specifically prevented a break in, I do know that they work!
Glass break detectors are awesome because once you get them set up and in use, you will get a notice on your phone if they detect glass breaking. This is great because oftentimes thieves break in through windows and if you know a window is broken, you can call it in to the police.
Okay, in all honesty, I don’t have a glass break detector, but we discovered that our Amazon Alexa offers it! Our kids were home alone one day when I got a “breaking glass detected” alert on my phone. As it turns out, they were just watching their movie a little bit too loud, but it works!
The Ring Doorbell Camera is great for alerts letting you know that someone is near your door. It’s also great because it allows you to speak through it. This has been helpful to me when strangers appear on my porch and I am able to talk to them as though I am home.
These are pretty cut and dry, but they work. Once your window opens, a loud alarm will go off and boy are they loud!
Never hide a key again! Smart locks are awesome and they keep you from having that cheesy rock or silly hiding place that most thieves can easily find.
Has the last year of being stuck inside of our homes turn you into a new houseplant enthusiast? You’re not the only one! Nurseries and plant sellers reported their sales jumping from 15-20 sales per day to 200+ sales per day throughout the last 12 months! There are even now plant owners that have blown up in popularity on Instagram and TikTok.
If you are one of the people placing these orders for new houseplants, you may still need some tips and tricks for growing houseplants. I know, I for instance, can grow aloe amazingly, but I really struggle with some other houseplants.
Here’s the reality. Houseplants can be very dangerous and even deadly to pets or children. Preferably before buying these plants, you need to check out whether or not your plants are poisonous. Pets and small children can get hold of plants lightning quick, and it’s best to not have them in the home.
If your plant came with a tag, be sure and keep it so that you know what the plant is. Those tags often include care instructions, which means that with care instructions on hand, you’ll always know how to care for the plant.
Okay, so it’s not a child or a pet, but let’s be honest. Plants require commitment. Some of them require serious commitment. They need more than occasional watering. Even a short vacation will require you to set up a plant-sitter so that they can be watered while you are gone.
Drought resistant plants are important, especially if you live in the Western side of the USA that is suffering severe drought conditions. Additionally, these plants are easier to care for.
Find a store or nursery that grows pesticide free plants, one that uses natural fertilizers and one that uses recycled products in their packaging. You’ll feel better about your purchase.
Did you take out a reverse mortgage? Many seniors consider reverse mortgages to deal with financial issues that they encounter during retirement.
There are many different reverse mortgage pros and cons to consider. Although there can be a lot of great reasons to take out a reverse mortgage, you need to be aware of the potential pitfalls that you are going to encounter when you have a reverse mortgage.
Some of the problems with reverse mortgages might creep up on you over time. Fortunately, there are ways that you can deal with them.
Here are some things that you can do to offset any issues that were created by a reverse mortgage:
You can also refinance your reverse mortgage if you don’t like the interest or other terms associated with it. This might be your best option if you think that you will need to sell your property in a few years. It will keep you from losing a large amount of money and interest. It would also be ideal if you want to make sure that your kids or other people inheriting your estate will get more.
The process of refinancing your reverse mortgage is very similar to that of refinancing a traditional mortgage. The only caveat is that you generally need to wait at least 18 months after taking out the original reverse mortgage before you can refinance it.
You should take a close look at your credit history before submitting a refinancing application. Your payment history keeping up property charges is going to be the most important factor for qualifying for a better HECM in most cases.
If your credit has improved since you took out the last reverse mortgage, you will possibly be able to qualify for that term. You can also try to take steps to improve your credit score if you want to take preemptive measures to get a better deal. You should start by looking at your credit reports and seeing if there are any errors on them. Around 20% of all credit reports contain errors, which could be hurting your score. You should also take a close look at any outstanding debt that you have. If you still have a large amount of money from your reverse mortgage, then you should use it to pay off high interest debts, such as credit card bills. This will both boost your credit score and minimize your long-term expenses. It will be a win-win, especially if you get a cheaper read on your reverse mortgage.
You should also settle any possible liens on your property. They could be hurting your potential of getting a better read on your reverse mortgage.
When you take out a reverse mortgage, the bank is going to give you money that will later be taken out of the value of your home. Unfortunately, you have to hold onto the property if you don’t want to pay the reverse mortgage loan back.
You might end up in a situation where you really can’t stay in your home. You might feel like you are a prisoner to your loan, because it is keeping you from relocating if you can’t afford to pay it back.
You might not have been concerned about this when you first took out your reverse mortgage. You probably thought that you would never relocate. Unfortunately, problems happen. You might get an unexpected divorce. You might develop health problems that prevent you from living in an area with bad weather or excessive pollution. Your kids might take new jobs in another state, which forces you to move as well if you want to be close to them.
Before you bite the bullet and sell your home to repay your reverse mortgage, you should explore other options. One idea that you might want to consider is leasing out your home and using the cash from it to pay for new housing wherever you want to relocate.
This might give you the best of both worlds. You get to keep the money that you secured from your reverse mortgage and have the flexibility to relocate at the same time. You don’t even have to physically deal with your tenants if you are willing to outsource that obligation to a property management company.
Property taxes are among the reasons that people face problems with their reverse mortgages. You might be required to repay your reverse mortgage if you stop paying your property taxes.
You might be able to get ahead of the problem by seeking property tax relief services. The terms of these services vary between jurisdictions, so you should pay close attention to the requirements. The governor of Idaho recently signed a property tax relief bill, which is an example of how these services work. If you are eligible, you might avoid property tax problems that could trigger a requirement to repay your reverse mortgage.
There are a variety of reasons that reverse mortgages have become popular in recent years. They really do offer a lot of benefits. However, there are some situations where they could become a burden, so you need to take steps to avoid that from being the case.
Yesterday we talked about great home improvement projects to take on this fall, but I didn’t get them all on there! I am in a major home and décor update mode right now and I keep getting so many ideas of things to do!
If you are looking for good ways to spruce up the look of your home, check out these ideas. I know that it’s technically still summer, but I have already started some of these home improvement projects to do this fall.
Okay, this might not be exactly a typical “home improvement” project, but I love to change up my room décor with the seasons. I really, really love fall so I enjoy keeping fall colors in my bedroom décor with this change, but I also like to keep my room color bright. I often add the fall décor in the form of accessories like throw pillows, etc.
I clean my windows relatively often, but I typically only clean the outside of my windows two times per year. I do this in the spring (because I love seeing those flowers bloom) and in the fall! Fall is a great time to clean the outside of your windows because with hot, dry temperatures of summer can bring on a lot of dust. It’s not always noticeable either. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see how bright your view can be again.
Fall is the ideal time to clean out your gutters. Save this one til the end of fall though because you want to get all of those fallen leaves out of your gutters before the winter rain and snow hit.
Do a sweep around your yard/property and make sure that all of your lawn tools are cleaned up and put away. This will help keep them in good condition until next yard/gardening season comes along.
Inspect your trees and shrubs for broken/weak branches so that you can clip them and keep them from falling during any windstorm or heavy rain or snow.
Do you own your own home? I don’t know about you, but as a homeowner it seems like I am always doing home improvement projects. That’s especially crazy to me because my home is less than 3 years old. I somehow assumed I would be maintenance free for years to come. Nope. That’s not how it is working out for me.
I did a lot of yard and garden work over the summer, so now that the weather will start cooling down soon, we will be headed back indoors for some home improvement projects to do in the Fall.
While my house doesn’t need exterior paint, I do want to change up it’s appearance a little bit. That’s why I decided to paint the door! It’s perfect because it’s a small project that will make a big difference. Plus, it is still warm enough that we can paint outdoors and have it dry quickly.
Honestly, I have a dog and a huge yard. The white door simply wasn’t working out for me anymore anyway. I can’t decide between red, teal and black though!
Now is a great time to get that house clean! If you don’t own a pressure washer, you can hire it out or even rent a pressure washer for a day. Pressure washing is a great way to get rid of any dust, dirt, mold or mildew, which is a great idea to do now before the weather gets wetter!
If you are not familiar with pressure washing and you plan to do it yourself, be sure and do some research! It’s easy to damage your home’s paint if you use too powerful of a setting.
If you have a fireplace or woodstove, fall is the time to get your chimney cleaned and prep your fireplace. Fireplaces can be extremely dangerous, but especially so in the fall when people start lighting those fires again.
When home improvement meets saving money it makes me very, very happy. That’s why I highly recommend caulking your doors and windows this fall. This is especially good to do before you turn on your furnace. The nooks and crannies around these areas can cause significant heat loss. Caulking them can seriously save you big on your heating bills.
The damp days of spring can cause damage to exterior wood on your home. Now is the time to inspect your siding and other wooden fixtures to look for water damage or dry rot and replace them before winter hits and the rain/snow begins again.
As a family we love traveling to new destinations. Some of them require a long flight, but most require very little travel time in the car. Recently we returned from Star Valley, Wyoming. It’s the first time we have been there but definitely not the last. We already can’t want to go back! Check out these fun things you could do together as a family.
If you want a great place to stay then check out Cabin Creek Inn. These cute cabins have full bathrooms and AC. There is a heated pool and hot tub as well as FREE breakfast in the morning. The breakfast even has cinnamon rolls! The owners keep everything clean and orderly. We will come back again!
It’s the new school year and many of us are still in the summer mode. I’ve found that if I’m organized and on top of homework, sports and commitments that things go much smoother. There are a few things that we do to keep us organized, check this out!
It’s that time of year when zucchinis are growing non stop. If you have a garden you may be overwhelmed with what you can do with all of the zucchinis. Here’s a couple of our favorite recipes to use our zucchinis up. They’re perfect for gifting to neighbors or baking for an after school snack.
