Easy Ways to Save Money on Spring Skiing Gear & Tickets

It’s time for some spring skiing which is my favorite time to ski. The weather is usually more enjoyable and the days are longer. Our kids are growing so fast that we ‘ve found it easier to rent their gear. We’ve also found some ways to save money on the ski gear and tickets! Check these easy ways you can save some money too.

  1. Check your local college/university. Did you know if you live in a skiing community some  universities rent out gear? We went to Weber State University which is near where we live and we were able to rent skis for our kids for cheaper than any other ski rental shop. So cool!
  2. Shop on Facebook Market Place or local classifieds. If you want to buy some ski gear, then be sure to check these places first. Especially right now in the Spring, people will be selling items they didn’t use this year. So it’s a Win-Win!
  3. Ski Resort Spring Specials. Check out ski  resorts for deals they may be running right now. Some resorts have fun deals like ski free in the spring if you buy a season pass for next year. They also may have discounts for the kiddos too. So check out your favorite resort and see what specials are going on now.
  4. End of year clearance sales. Did you know that a lot of store start putting their ski gear on clearance starting in March? That’s when I get my stuff to finish off the ski season now or to start the new ski season next Winter. It’s the best time to grab new clothing, coats, gloves, hats, skis and more. So shop your favorite brands and save!

Small Generators and Power Stations Than Can Help in the Event of a Power Outage

The weather has been wild lately. Are you one of the unlucky ones that have found yourself in a power outage in recent weeks? I am. We had an ice storm here which turned into 5 days without power or wifi and 3 days without cell service! It was rough, but we survived it.

Thankfully we have a fireplace, so we all drug mattresses and blankets out and had a family campout in the living room. Honestly, it was a wonderful bonding experience with the kids. That being said, we tend to be on the prepared side so we have several generators prepared for just this situation. We were able to plug our refrigerator and freezer in off and on to keep our food cold and safe. We were also able to plug in a lamp and the TV and DVD player, so we were able to watch some movies.

THE BEST ENERGY BITES
By Mel’s Kitchen Cafe ( you can check all of her notes here on her site!)

INGREDIENTS

  •  1 cup (3.5 ounces) old-fashioned oats
  •  1/3 cup (1.25 ounces) ground flaxseed meal
  •  2/3 to 1 cup (6-9 ounces) nut butter (see note)
  •  1/4 cup (3 ounces) honey
  •  Dash of vanilla extract
  •  Pinch of salt (more to taste, if needed)
  •  Add-ins: mini chocolate chips, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, dried fruit, chia seeds, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a food processor, add the oats and process until coarsely chopped. If you don’t have a food processor coarsely chop the oats in a blender and add to a bowl.
  2. Add the flaxseed meal, nut butter, honey, vanilla and salt. Process/mix until the mixture comes together into a soft but not overly sticky ball.
  3. If the mixture is overly dry, add nut butter a tablespoon at a time and process/mix until the consistency is soft but not overly sticky or crumbly.
  4. Remove the blade from the food processor, if using. Add any add-in ingredients, and mix with your hands until evenly combined.
  5. Roll the dough into small balls (I use my small cookie scoop – #60) and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or tray. Refrigerate until firm enough to stack in a lidded container or in a bag. The energy bites can be frozen for several months or refrigerated for a week or so.

Staycation Ideas You Can Embrace During Quarantine!

I know you’d much rather be gone on vacation somewhere new, exploring new places and trying new things. I get it, me too! But things have changed a bit for us in the last year and that goes for our summer plans as well. Don’t let it get you down. You can embrace a fun staycation and still create wonderful memories with new experiences! Here’s a few different ideas of ways and tips for you to be able to embrace a staycation quarantine style.

Plan your staycation

Don’t simply come up with a date for your staycation, put some planning into it. Just like you would if you were going somewhere new, plan your location, food, activities and even entertainment. Yes this means making sure you have all the supplies you need. I recommend putting it all together in a box so it’s easy to access and already pulled together (you could even throw it into one of your suitcases). Create your schedule and start saving for your staycation. If that means you want to create a fun environment in your home with some decorations or spa like bathroom accessories make sure you’ve set aside the funds for it all.

Create a Theme for your Staycation

There are so many different “themes” you could come up with for your staycation. This also goes into the planning. Once you’ve created your theme it will be easier to come up with what activities you’d like to do, food and everything else. For example: if you wanted to create a Disney theme staycation you could make sure everyone has fun Disney shirts for the weekend, plan on making some Disney inspired treats to enjoy, figure out a fun Disney movie and put together some Disney crafts. Here are some other cute/fun themes you could get ideas for:

  • Camping Theme (inside or outside)
  • Culinary Theme (take it around the world)
  • Yoga Theme
  • Kids Theme (get them involved in the things they’d like to do)
  • Beach Theme
  • Hiking Theme
  • Movie Theme (pick just one and base your activities around it or a series)

Why Enjoy a Staycation

It’s so easy to get wrapped up in everything negative about our circumstances. I know we all want to be out exploring and playing but this can help you look at the positive. You’ll be able to enjoy the time together as a family still while having some fun. It can also save you lots of money. Depending on where you go, travel can be expensive. So a staycation is a great way to save money. Plus you’re not having to pack and unpack, wait in long lines, deal with the airport and so much more. Give it a try. Create a fun staycation idea and enjoy the things that will make your family happy!

Four Fundamental Steps For Successful Essay Writing

We tend to write everywhere. High schools, colleges, and universities require us to write hundreds of complicated essays. Given our ability to write quickly, we have to follow different instructions and requirements to complete the tasks. However, not everyone knows how to craft a successful essay from scratch. We have delved into the topic and are ready to provide practical steps for successful essay writing.

Topic Is Essential

To compose a top-notch piece, you have to understand the prompt. Questions can be tricky, and it is crucial to understand them before writing the paper. If the professor assigned you the topic, analyze it. Ask yourself whether you understand what you have to do. If not, make sure to contact your teacher and ask them to clarify the essay’s aim.

The Pre-Writing Process

The pre-writing process is what professional college essay writers call the main preparation. Understanding the topic is excellent, but it is insufficient to complete the assignment and get a high grade. Aside from knowing what to write about, you have to think how and in what language to build the paper. The strategy comprises several crucial steps to make the essay as readable and understandable as possible. Let’s examine them all in a broader scope.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming is a necessary component to complete. The thing is, every essay has an idea behind it. And to write a successful piece, we have to think outside the box and stand out. Coming up with random ideas will do you no good. Not only should you think of pertinent concepts, but also you have to develop unique ideas that will thrill the reader.

Brainstorming helps you reach this goal. It is a method of making you think about the topic and quickly generate as many ideas as possible. There are many brainstorming techniques; however, we will point out the three most effective ones.

Mind-Mapping

When using this method, you simply create visual maps to help you write down relevant ideas. This method has proved its efficacy, as visual maps are easy to track and analyze after creating. You can boost your efficiency by adding a Venn diagram.

Listing

If you don’t have much time and look for something simple, this method is as easy as pie. All you need to have is a pen and paper. Simply start listing down ideas that come to your mind and may somehow be related to the topic. You can write them in whatever order and form. Just make sure they are clear to you, and you have enough space to analyze them.

Freewriting

Use this technique if you have enough time. The freewriting strategy is something similar to the stream of consciousness. You start writing everything that correlates with the prompt. Listing and freewriting are a bit similar. However, they differ by the overall approach. While listing requires writing simple words and phrases, freewriting requires composing full-fledged sentences and finding similarities between them.

Researching

When you have finished brainstorming and come up with many relevant ideas, it is the right time to start researching the topic. Every essay has to be backed up with credible material. And to find such, you have to carry out thorough research.

Look for credible, peer-reviewed articles. You are highly encouraged to look for them at your school’s library. However, with what is going on these days, you can stay safe and find sources at home.

Look for authoritative material on Google Scholar, Academia.edu, Research Gate, and other government and educational websites. When looking for books and articles, pay close attention to the publication year and publisher. Keep in mind that the more credible the publishing house, the more believable the work itself. If you find evidence on Google Scholar, check how many times it appeared in other people’s works. The higher number guarantees the document is reliable.

Outlining

Once you conducted research and found everything you looked for, proceed to outline the paper. Such a layout ensures you write the essay according to the rules and make it coherent and understandable. It also eliminates any chance of adding irrelevant points to the paper.

Since the outline is an optional element, you don’t have to submit it to the teacher. Nor do you have to write it using a certain structure. Just make it a clear and short plan for your forthcoming paper.

Preserve The Structure and Format

Every essay should follow the structure and format. It is a must to get the desired grade. Ensure dividing every essay part (the introduction, the body, and the conclusion) by making indentations.

Plus, don’t forget about proper citation. Depending on your discipline, you have to use either MLA or APA style. Make sure you use the right format. In case you are uncertain of the formatting style, ask your teacher beforehand.

Edit And Proofread

The moment you write the last word doesn’t mean you can submit the paper. The work is by no means finished. When you write the first draft, edit and proofread it. Read the piece out loud and use Grammarly to perfect your essay.

The Bottom Line

Writing an essay is not an easy task. Even though everyone has been writing from the cradle, it can be hard to complete certain papers. The above list aims to help you write any standard essay according to the widely accepted rules. Use this strategy to speed up the writing process and boost overall quality.

Brighten Up Your Home on a Budget

I don’t know about you, but by about this time of year, I am in need of some brightness in my life. The darker days, the clouds and the gloominess just bum me out. I need some sunlight and some Vitamin D in my life. I don’t have unlimited funds though so as much as I want to build a sunroom on my home, it’s just not in the cards. I’ve been making some changes in a budget friendly way though, so if you are looking to brighten up your home on a budget, here are some tips for you!

While I haven’t implemented all of the changes yet, I have done some of them and plan to make more changes soon. The changes that I have made so far and I am loving these changes!

Brighten Up Your Home on a Budget

These are the products that I have bought so far to go toward making these changes in my house and my mind set!

Flowers

Yep, I have been splurging a little bit on fresh flowers, but it has gone a long way toward brightening up my home and making a change in my space. Since I obviously can’t go out and pick wildflowers right now, I have been going to Trader Joes and grabbing the $3.99 bouquets of flowers. They have been lasting up to 2 weeks!

Sheer Drapes

Yes, we need to have our winter friendly drapes up still to help keep the heat in and the cold out, however, I need more light. A change that has worked for me is to pair my winter drapes with some sheer drapes in the middle of them. This allows me to open up the drapes during the brighter days and the bright sun comes in through the sheer drapes.

Spring Clean and Organize

No, it’s not spring yet, but spring cleaning can do wonders toward brightening up your space. Clutter and disorganization brings you down and the feeling of walking through a freshly cleaned space with clean floors and cleared off counters will bring you joy.

Even More Ways to Save Money on a Wedding

My husband and I recently decided to plan a vowel renewal ceremony so forgive me for going on and on about wedding stuff. We had a very simple, very rushed wedding the first time around, so I’m very excited about planning this!

As excited as I am, I’m still all about saving money! That’s why I am continuing to search out even more ways to save money on a wedding. If you are planning a wedding or vowel renewal too, here are some of the best tips I have found so far to save money!

Even More Ways to Save Money on a Wedding

This list of even more money saving tips can significantly bring down your stress levels and make this special day even better!

Get a Smaller Cake

People tend to go all out on cakes and honestly, there is no reason to. For my first wedding (which was very budget friendly, btw), we bought a small wedding cake along with a couple of sheet cakes that were decorated in a very simple manner (white icing flowers). We saved hundreds of dollars by doing this.

Go with Less Expensive Invites

We live in a great time when printed products are MUCH cheaper than they used to be. If you are going with printed invites, here are my savings tips:

  • Single sided flat card invites are cheaper
  • Search out promo code and coupons
  • Look at Groupon (seriously. You can save big)

Or, if you are not particular about your invites, just send out an evite via text or an invitation via social media! For all of your social media savvy friends, this is a great choice.

Minimal Décor

Minimal décor is hot right now anyway, why not use this as a way to save money?! I am a big fan of minimal decor anyway so I love this idea!

Thoughtful Gift Ideas for Your Teachers this Valentine’s Day

I’m starting to get emails from my kids teachers with information about this years Valentine’s Day parties. It’s definitely a more laid back, easy going year with COVID-19 in the air. However, they are still able to have some sort of celebration for Valentine’s Day. This year, more than ever, I feel like it’s important to show our teachers how much we have appreciated them. Here are a few gift suggestions that are both thoughtful and somewhat easy to give to your teachers this year.

  1. Hand made notes from your students AND yourself. We asked our teachers what their favorite thing to receive from their students and the number one answer was a hand written note by their students AND their parents. A note of encouragement and praise goes a long way. I would suggest for sure doing this. You can pair it with an item below, but try to make them a note, it will definitely be appreciated.
  2. Gift Cards. This was a close second on the list of favorite items. It’s so nice to get a gift card to a favorite place nearby for the teachers. That way they can use it whenever it’s convenient for them. Attached a gift card to a handwritten note too!
  3. Flowers. Right now on Groupon, you can score some awesome deals on flowers. Grab those gift cards and then order some flowers for your teachers. You can even look into real plants. This is a fun way to brighten their home or school classroom.
  4. Personalized Gift. Head over to Jane and shop their teacher options that have personalized items. Write their name on a cute board or bag. There are some super cute items to choose from.
  5. Board game. I know teachers love getting fun family gifts too. You can head to Amazon and check out these fun games they could play with their families. Add a handwritten note to make it even more special!

7 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding

Are you planning a wedding soon? Did you know that the average wedding in the US is just under $30,000? I know I’m a bit of a cheapskate, but that just seems to be a little too much to me. How about you?

If you don’t have this much money to spend on your wedding, or if you would rather have that money spent on something else, here are 7 ways to save money on your wedding. Any of these tips individually can help you save money, but once you start adding several of these together, you can save big money.

7 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding

These money saving tips can bring your stress levels down on this incredibly important day in your life.

Cut Down on Your Guest List

There is no secret that the more guests you have at your wedding, the more money you need to spend. With more guests you have the higher expense of more food, more drinks, more chairs, a bigger space, etc.

Choose an Off Season Date

Summer weddings are often more expensive. Consider scheduling your wedding during the “off season” and  you might be surprised by how much money you can save on your venue as well as other services.

Additionally, avoiding popular days of the week can save you big money as well. Say no to a Saturday wedding for example and you can save a lot of money on your venue and other wedding services.

Avoid Flowers

This may be a no-go for you, but if you choose to go with a non floral theme, you can save a significant amount of money on your wedding costs. Many people choose to go with real flowers for their bouquet and nothing else, to keep the costs down.

Limit Your Bar

Sure you want to have a bar (and no, not a cash bar…that’s tacky), but one way to save a significant amount of money is to limit the types of alcohol you serve at your bar. Offering solely beer and wine for example will help you save money, while also keeping your guests happy.

Have you planned a wedding recently? What tips did you follow to save money?
