6 Fun Family Activities You Can do This Valentine’s Day

In my early years of motherhood, Valentine’s Day was just another day with a quick store bought Valentine’s card and a few pieces of candy. My heart wasn’t into it. However, the past couple of years I’ve come to love this day and make it more memorable. Not by buying more candy or giving more gifts, but by spending quality time with the people I love and showing them how much I love them.

I’ve put together 10 activities you can do together as a family to make this day more memorable. You definitely don’t need to do them all. Pick and choose the ones that would fit your family. Have fun planning the day. Hopefully we can make Valentine’s Day 2021 a fun year to remember.

  1. Fun Valentine’s Day Breakfast. Start the day right with a creative breakfast. In years past, we have made pancakes, put a little pink food coloring in them, shaped them into hearts and then put whip cream on them, topped with berries. It’s actually a pretty simple, yet yummy breakfast.
  2. Scavenger hunt. Set up clues around the house for a fun scavenger hunt. You can make this as detailed as you want. You can either put treats or kind notes at each spot, or nothing at all, just have them find the clues to the end where you can have a final treat/toy/surprise. My kids LOVE this.
  3. Candy Gram. Did you ever get these growing up? My parents would make these for us when we were kids and we loved them! Try making a fun candy gram for each kid or even your spouse and tell them how much you love them using yummy candies. Here is one example with some printables as well.
  4. Spend Quality Time Together. If you have a favorite activity to do as a family, make it happen! If you don’t, try playing some games together. Get out those board games and card games and play together. Put away your phones and really talk with the family. Kids can notice when they are getting full attention! Make it happen.
  5. Make Valentine’s for Friends & Neighbors. Growing up we would always make Valentine’s, put them on our friends doorsteps, ring the doorbell and then RUN! It was always so fun and a little terrifying. I’ve noticed no one does that anymore. However, this year would be a great year to do a little door bell dashing to your friends. Who wouldn’t love a little surprise on their doorstep? Think about some older people in your neighborhood. I’m sure they would love this.
  6. Make Chocolate Fondue.  Chocolate dipped strawberries are typical for a yummy Valentine’s day treat. Why not make them from home? If you don’t have a fondue maker, buy one now on Amazon and it will be here in time for the big day. Grab some Rice Krispy treats, marshmallows, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries, bananas, and pretzels to dip in the chocolate. This would be a great way to end off the night.

Save on Flowers This Valentine’s Day!

I hear more and more how women don’t want flowers for Valentine’s Day but the more I talk to them all I hear is they’re too expensive. While I do understand that and know that “just because” flowers are nicer to receive than holiday flowers, it’s a great way for someone to show their love. So I wanted to share with you how we save money on flowers!

Grocery Store Flowers – this is my favorite way to get flowers and the one way I find we save the most money. Often times grocery stores will discount their flowers when they start to die but I still find I can get another week or two just by clipping their ends and giving them fresh water. We’ll pay between $5-$10 for a bouquet of flowers and put them in a vase we already have.

Local Flower Shops – make sure you’re signed up for their emails. We have a couple local flower shops that will have deals on flowers. One of my favorite local shops sells “12 Month of Flower” fundraiser cards. We pay $30 for the card and can go to their store each month for a wrapped bouquet of fresh, seasonal flowers! It’s like a gift that keeps on giving all year.

Groupon / Living Social – this time of year we’ll often see discounts on flowers from a variety of sites. My best tip is to make sure you look at the site before you purchase a voucher from Groupon. We’ll usually see voucher that are like $30 but you pay only $15. This is awesome – if they have bouquets that sell for $30. So take a look at the flower website before you purchase your voucher off of Groupon or Living Social.

Costo & Sam’s Club – These stores are great for large bouquets and this time of year they usually have a pretty good selection. Plus I find they’re larger bouquets so you can divide them up and get a couple vases to put them in.

Don’t forget we post deals for Valentine’s Day flower when we find them. You can keep up on these deals by following our Valentine’s Day Category but hopefully this will help you find the best deal for your budget.

What will be the cost to construct a home in Ontario?

In Canada, the average cost for building a home is around $118-$189 per sqft. The majority of Canadians wish to build their house rather than just purchasing one. It’s because there are several benefits of constructing a house. However, it also comes with some difficulties.

The average cost to construct a detached home in major cities of Canada

As per the Canadian Cost Guide 2020 of Altus Group, the per square foot cost to build a detached house in major cities of Canada is stated below:

  • Calgary: $125 to $185
  • Vancouver: $145 to $260
  • Ottawa: $120 to $195
  • Edmonton: $130 to $185
  • Montreal: $105 to $180
  • John’s: $110 to $145
  • Halifax: $90 to $150
  • Greater Toronto Area: $115 to $215
  • Winnipeg: $125 to $190

Is it possible to obtain a loan for house construction?

Several mortgages are available for self-building a home in Canada. But to purchase land, you have to get another loan that normally has a higher interest rate in comparison to a traditional home loan. The down payment is also huge i.e. between 25 to 30 percent. After that, the construction mortgage covers the construction costs. The terms and interest rates differ from one lender to another. Basically, there are 2 types of the construction mortgage.

  1. Completion of construction: Here the loan is transferred upon the completion of construction.
  2. Draw/progress-draw mortgage: Here the mortgage borrower withdraws money in parts as the construction progresses.

How much time is required to construct a home?

On average, it takes nearly 10-16 months to construct a home, if construction work is executed as per plan. It doesn’t include any unforeseen issues or delays due to bad weather conditions.

Tips to decrease the construction cost of a home

  • Take bids: Prefer taking bids from several builders to choose the best among them. Don’t always rely on the cheapest contractors as they often sacrifice due dates or use substandard material. Do detailed research and select a contractor having outstanding ratings and vast experience in this field.
  • Design a small house: The small the house, the less will be the construction cost. Limit the number of bathrooms based on your requirements. Do consider replacement windows prices, door prices, electrical and plumbing costs when designing a house.
  • Engage in labor work: You can save on labor costs if you do some of the tasks yourself. Like you can paint your home or can install light fixtures. Also, you can install kitchen cabinets when plumbing work is finished.
  • Save on home interiors: A great sum of money can be saved on home interiors. Like you can opt for budget-friendly Calgary windows instead of installing expensive ones.
  • Use recycled and reclaimed items: A lot of recycled and reclaimed items can be used for your new home. These items are not only eco-friendly but also saves money. You can find many charitable organizations and salvage shops where you can get items like doors, windows, bathroom vanities, and kitchen cabinets.

Tips for Thrift Shopping on a Budget

Last night we talked a little bit about thrift store flipping. Have you tried that out yet? Today let’s talk a little bit about our tips for thrift shopping on a budget. It doesn’t matter if you are thrifting to find something that you need, thrifting to flip, or thrifting for fun, saving money is always smart!

Here are my top tips for shopping on a budget. Check these out to see if you already do any of these, or if you want to learn some new trips! Do you like to go thrift shopping?  I do! I mean, I have literally bought probably 75% of my clothing at thrift shops (and the rest have been bought at discount stores such as Ross Dress for Less).  The thing is though, I know it seems like it is super easy to save money when you are thrift shopping, but the reality is that thrift shopping can actually cost quite a lot of money these days, especially with the prevalence of higher end thrift stores that have been popping up all around us.

In order to combat spending too much when I go to thrift stores, I follow a couple of rules.  Here are my rules for the best ways to save money at thrift stores:

Tips for Thrift Shopping on a Budget

Set a Budget

I know I harp on this one a lot, but you absolutely have to set a budget before any and all thrift store trips. This is especially true if you are thrifting for the fun of it. It could be just about the same as gambling if you head into a store to just spend money on nothing in specific.

Buy Only What You Will Use

Even after all I do to save money and how often I talk about money saving tips, I still get caught up in the “It’s a good deal so I have to buy it” mindset. I’ve had to really shift my thinking so that I make sure that I only buy what I will absolutely wear and/or use. It took me a long time buy I no longer am tempted to buy something just because it’s cheap.

See if Your Favorite Thrift Store Has a Discount Day

I have two favorite thrift shops. One changes the “discount color tag of the day” every week. Each week that special color tag is marked at half price. My other favorite store offers a deal where their specific color tag is just $1.99 on Mondays. So no matter what the item is, if it is Monday, it is only $1.99. A friend of mine found a beautiful and brand new rug that was normally priced at $300 for just $1.99. Trust me…discount days are worth looking into.

What is your favorite savings tip for thrift shopping?

My Top Tips for Thrift Shop Flipping

Are you a thrifting enthusiast? So am I. Seriously. I may have been known to overspend a time or two during my thrift store shopping trips in the past. I love finding awesome deals on cute clothes, or home decor. I almost NEVER buy brand new home decor goodies (or clothing either for that matter). I hate spending full price and I hate wasteful shopping. I mean, why shouldn’t I enjoy something that someone has finished using? I love it!

You know what is even better than thrift store shopping though? Thrift store flipping!! Yes, tha’s right. As much as I love thrift shopping. I have found that I really love making money off of my thrift store purchases! An added bonus of my newfound love of thrift store flipping is that my husband is all for me thrifting now! He was always fine with me thrift shopping, because he knows how much I love it, but now he is excited when I head out because I am working on ways to make money, not just fill up the house with more good finds.

My Top Tips for Thrift Shop Flipping

Did you know that there are people out there who make a FULL TIME LIVING by thrift shop flipping? It’s true! If you are ready to turn your love for thrifting into a love for flipping, check out my top tips for thrift shop flipping.

Create a Budget

Whether you are thrifting for fun or for flipping, you need to set a budget. If you are doing this to make a profit, you need to set a budget and stick to it. Keep that budget low enough that you know you can make a profit when you sell.

Avoid Generic or Store Brand Items

If your goal is to flip clothing, don’t bother buying any generic or store brand clothing, no matter how cheap it is. It very rarely sells for a profit at all. Even if you find an article of clothing that is brand new with tags, people are going to pass since they know they can get it cheap themselves brand new at the store. It may seem silly, but trust me on this one. It’s a waste of money.

Download Your Selling Apps on Your Phone

No matter where you are selling (Poshmark, Mercari, OfferUp, FB Marketplace are some of my favorites), you need to download the apps onto your phone and keep your phone with you as you shop. With the apps so easily accessible, you can quickly look up the sales value of the items before you buy.

Board Game Organization – Why I Made The Switch To Bags & So Should You!

I’ve seen this trick on lots of different organizational blogs and while I was skeptical at first I’m now in love with it! Board games can take up so much room and if you’re like us, you might have gotten more for Christmas. We play board and card games often as a family which means they’re getting pulled out but not usually put back the same way (I get it, it’s like playing Tetris with the games!). So I finally decided it was time to switch all our board games over to bags!

At first I was overwhelmed. How many bags do I buy? What sizes do I need? Do I really want to throw all those boxes away? What do I do with the games when we’re ready to get rid of them? But let me ease your mind if it’s anything like mine – IT WILL ALL BE OK! If you happen to purchase to many bags, Amazon has made it easy to return items. Throwing away the boxes was actually therapeutic and don’t worry, they make disposable zip lock bags so when the time comes to weed out the games we longer play with, I’ll transfer them to disposable bags, label it and hand it down to someone who can love it the same way we did. And heck, they might appreciate all the space I’m saving them.

So have I convinced you to switch your games over to bags yet? I promise, it’s easier than you might think and while it will get messier before it gets better, it’s worth it! Start by pulling all your games out into a big open area (I used our living room floor but the dining table works too.) Then set aside all the games you no longer play with. If you haven’t played it in the last 2 years I’d say now is a good time to pass it on to someone else. This is also a good time to gather all your supplies. You’ll want your zipper bags, a label maker (if you don’t have one you can also tape the name of the game onto your bag after you’ve cut it off the box) scissors and your baskets (if you plan to store them in baskets which I highly recommend).

Once you’ve gathered all your supplies it’s time to start transferring your board games over. Remove all the game pieces from the box and decided which bag is going to work the best for that game. Here’s where I’m glad I bought the variety pack. Surprisingly, most of the games fit inside the sizes that came in this pack (I ended up needing to purchase 2 set because we have so many games). We used the smaller bags to keep the small game pieces together (or cards if the game had any). Then we put the board game and the smaller zipper bag inside the corresponding bag. One tip we learning is don’t try to “squeeze” your game into the bags. The kids are going to be in and out of these bags and they need it to zip up easily so don’t be afraid to go slightly bigger in size.

Then you’ll want to label your pouch. We used chalkboard tape, cut it down to size and wrote the name on the outside but you could also cut the game name off the box (remember you’ll just be throwing the boxes away anyways) and tape it to the top of your bag. Either way is going to work great but if you have smaller children that can’t read yet, I recommend cutting the name off the box, that way they can identify the game easier.

You’ve now completed the hardest task and can start organizing them into your bins. We bought these fabric bins to store on the shelves we had for all our games. The kids can easily see into them and pull out the game they’re looking for.

Card games? Are you wondering what we did with our card games? Well, this was my favorite part! I bought the photo storage cases and put each card game inside one. Then we labeled the top of the container and slipped them into a clear container to keep them all organized. This not only looks pretty but it’s so easy to see exactly which card games we have. Plus they’re easier for the kids to get them out to play with (often times they’d end of ripping the box because the tabs aren’t that easy to open).

I have loved having our games all organized in these storage bags and cases! I promise, you’ll be surprised at how much more room you gain when you switch your board games and card games over!

The Benefits of Playing Casino Games Online

Gambling has a rich history dating back to 3000 BC, and the first dice trace back to Mesopotamia. These dice were known as astragali, and you’d probably have a difficult time trying to throw the perfect 6 with them today.

Fortunately, the rise of technology has eradicated the need to do so, and today you can play a game of dice from the comfort of your home against other players worldwide. According to experts from https://cvasino.se/, casino games are one of the favourite pastimes in Sweden.

The world of entertainment has gone virtual, and internet casino games have established themselves as one of the most popular hobbies of modern times. Amy Martinsson, the expert here, shares all the benefits of online casino games.

Players in Sweden can enjoy online casino games legally since the Swedish Gambling Act passed in 2019. Until then, the government had a monopoly on all betting activities in the country. With the new bill in place, you can choose from more than 100 licensed online gambling sites. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of playing casino games on the internet.

Online Vs Land Based

Convenience

It’s fun to get dressed up and go out for a night on the town with your friends, but it’s not viable to do so every day. The best part of online casino games is that you don’t have to leave the convenience of your home. You can play all your favourite games from your comfy couch.

You don’t have to wait for a slot machine or a seat at a table to clear. You can play any game, any time.

More Options Online

When you visit a brick and mortar casino, you have limited options of slot machines and table games. Land-based casinos can’t offer you the variety of games that you’ll find online. The largest casino in Sweden offers 485 games. However, you’ll have to travel to Stockholm to enjoy it.

In comparison, the number of internet games already stood at 171,134 back in 2015. An online casino can host unlimited games and list them in categories. It couldn’t be easier.

It also offers a wide range of variants for each type of game. If you enjoy poker, you can have fun playing it against a dealer via live stream or you can challenge the automated random number generator. It’s the same for roulette, blackjack and baccarat.

Slots remain the firm favourite among internet gamblers, and you can choose from thousands of themes with different gameplay mechanisms. There are old-school classics and the modern video type with five reels and more paylines.

Save Money When Playing Online Casino Games

There are loads of ways you can save money by opting to play internet games as opposed to visiting your favourite land-based casino. You don’t have to travel or pay for food and drink at expensive restaurants. You can order in a pizza or go about your normal routine at home while signing in to the best online casinos.

Since online operators don’t have the same expenses as their land-based counterparts, they can offer excellent casino benefits. It’s a fantastic advantage of playing online as you can find welcome bonuses, reload offers and exciting VIP programmes that add value to your bankroll.

Online Casino Games Are Safe

With modern technology, fun on the internet is easy without concerns for your security, especially if you play online casino games on sites that are licensed and regulated. Thanks to regulatory bodies, online gambling sites have to meet stringent standards. All you need to do is make sure that the online casino uses the latest 128-bit SSL encryption and reputable payment providers.

Conclusion

Although online betting was curbed during 2020, there’s no stopping the industry from expanding even more in Sweden. When you play at licensed casino sites, you don’t have to be concerned about safety. Advanced SSL and PCI technology ensure your data is safe while online. All you have to do is choose your favourite online casino and play.

Things You Should STOP Buying This Year!

The new year has brought out the organizer in me. I’ve started realizing I don’t need as much “stuff” as I have and the more stuff I have, the more things I’m having to organize. This is true with all areas in my home. We have to much clothing in our closets, to much tupperware (please say I’m not alone in that one), a ton of toys, lots of craft supplies and on and on. So I’ve decided cutting back will not only help free up some space in our home and help us get organized but it’s going to save our pocket book too. Here’s what I’m working on NOT BUYING this year:

  • Food We Don’t Eat – I know with the new year everyone is looking at their eating habits and thinking about how they can clean it up but make sure you’re mindful of what you’re buying. Will you and your family really eat it?
  • Trendy Clothing – I have a habit of getting online and checking out the latest trends but remember trends fade and while they might be fun for a year (or sometimes two) they’ll need to be replaced. So I’m going to be more mindful while I clothing shop and watch for great deals on my staple pieces.
  • Books – Man I love buying books especially for my kids but we’ve really come to love the library. It not only helps with the space issue in our home and having to find more room for more books but also the pocket book!
  • Cosmetics – If you love trying out new cosmetic products like I do this can be a big money saver! Make sure you’ve used up (or close to) what you have on hand before purchase your next product. This can go for your makeup, hair products, perfumes and many others.
  • Gadgets – This will be a big money saver! I promise you don’t need the newest phone or an upgraded computer. These are all things that would be nice to have but not usually NEEDED! Plus, I’m making it a goal this year to throw out (safely) all the old gadgets we have laying around the house.
  • Home Decor – This one is another hard category for me and will take a lot of will power but I really have a great home decorated how I like so there’s not need to buy that cute new sign I saw at Hobby Lobby or the lamps that are on sale. A great way to give your home a new look without spending a penny is moving things around. Change where you have your pictures hung. Move your bed to the other side of the room. Give your lamp a new layer of paint that you have on hand.
  • Kitchen Gadgets – Isn’t fun to have a new kitchen gadget? But this goes along with trend a lot of the time and if you’re kitchen is as full as mine, you won’t be able to find a home for your new kitchen gadget. So be mindful and maybe hold off this year and see if you can do without.
  • Recipe Books – I luckily cleaned out my recipe books over the fall but lets say I got rid of more than I kept. That’s because there’s so many great recipes online! Often times I’ll find a recipe online and if we liked it, I’ll add it to our family cookbook otherwise I can just pass over it and not have it taking up space in my home.
  • CDs/DVDs – I know this one will be hard for some but there’s so many great options to have all your music and movies digital! This last year we switched over to using Vudu and have been able to get some of our movies we own on DVD digital, freeing up space in our home.

I’m excited to see just how much stuff I can clean out and get rid of but as well being able to save so much money. We’re planning a fun family trip (hoping to surprise the kids with this Christmas!) at the end of the year! What would you do with the extra money you save?

5 Tips for Getting Healthy This Year

We talked a little last night about how to get ourselves to drink more water. Well, I figured that the goal needed to be expanded a little to include general health. What can we do to increase our health overall? I’m no doctor and I don’t claim to know all there is to know, but I do know that there are some easy things that we can do in order to make ourselves healthier.

Check out these 5 tips for getting healthy this year and let me know if you have recently implemented these changes in your life. If you have made these changes recently, let me know how they have worked out for you and if you are noticing a change in how you feel.

5 Tips for Getting Healthy This Year

These tips will help you get healthy this year.

Drink More Water

Water is so so so important. I know that not everyone loves the taste of plain old water, but for optimum health you really need to be drinking the appropriate amount of water. Check out yesterday’s post for tips on how you can get more water each day.

Get enough Sleep

I know it is tempting to stay up later or get up earlier in hopes of getting more stuff done, but the reality is, you need sleep. Your body needs rest, so give in! Do your best to get at least 7+ hours of sleep each night.

Cut out the Junk Food

Cutting junk food out of your life may seem like it is a difficult step, but trust me, you will be glad you did it. Eating junk food adds unnecessary calories, sodium, sugar and more to your diet. None of us needs that.

Get out and Move

Many of us spend way too much time sitting in front of our computers and not moving around enough. Let’s change that for the benefit of our health. Try and get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day for.

Take a Social Media Break

We need a break. A break from the stress, the comparison, the jealousy, the hatred, the anger, and constant negative news. For most of us, this break can come from taking a break from social media. You may not realize it, but social media often does a lot of damage to our mental well being. Taking a break from it can truly help with our mental health. I try to take a couple of days away from social media each month and I always feel refreshed afterward.

5 Tips for Drinking More Water

Whether you set New Year’s Resolutions or not, I’m sure you could handle setting some new health goals for yourself. All of us can. For an easy one, how about we focus on making sure we are drinking enough water?

If this sounds like a good health goal to try and reach, let’s do it together. Here are 5 tips for drinking more water that we can all work together to do.

5 Tips for Drinking More Water

These tips will help you to have an easier time drinking more water throughout the day.

Get a great reusable bottle.

If you have a great reusable bottle that you can carry with you throughout the day, it will be easier for you to drink more. For me, for example, I love ice cold water and I am far more likely to drink water if it is cold. That’s why I keep my Hydroflask bottle with me all the time. My water is ice cold all day long.

Keep a Glass of Water on Your Nightstand

Many of us get thirsty at night, but when you are all snuggly and warm in bed you can easily avoid getting up to get a drink. If you keep a glass of water on your nightstand, you are more likely to drink when you need to.

Eat Lots of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Did you know that many fruits and vegetables have a high water content? It’s true. They do. So, you are not only adding healthy foods to your diet and getting more nutrients and less calories, but you are also adding to your water intake.

Swap Out Juice for Infused Water

Need flavor in your drink? You can still drink water and get all the flavor! Just be sure to ignore the soda and juice and add some yummy fresh fruit to your water. This will not only keep you more hydrated, but you will also be getting more vitamins and nutrients in your diet.

Set Goals

Are you a goal oriented kind of person? Set water drinking goals for yourself and you might just find yourself significantly increasing your water consumption throughout the day.
