Tahiti Village Resort & Spa: 7 Tips to Know Before You Go

You may have heard of Tahiti Village Resort and Spa located just outside of the Las Vegas strip. It’s a family friendly resort with an amazing pool and a lazy river. To make it even better there are a lot of things that are free and available to you while you are staying at the resort. Here are a list of 7 tips you’ll want to know before you go.

  1. When you check in as for a “Welcome Packet.” This is basically a pile of coupons that you can use on your stay. They also give you a paper with a list of 100 free things to do in Vegas. Another quick note-if you are hoping to do a Las Vegas show-once you are on the strip you will see a lot of booths with 1/2 price show tickets available. Check those out, they really do have cheaper tickets than what you may find online.
  2. There is a free shuttle to the Las Vegas Strip. This is offered every 30 minutes. You can check the front desk to see what the times are for that day. This was super helpful for our family. That way you don’t need to find and pay for parking on the strip.
  3. The resort offers free activities and crafts throughout the week. While we were there they had free root beer floats, Halloween crafts, bingo and more. You’ll see the schedule for your week at the front desk. Just take a picture of it and you’ll be ready to go. These are perfect if you have some down time and want to keep the kids entertained.
  4. Wiki Wiki Shop offers some staples in case you forget them. If you have a kitchen in your hotel room, you can buy things like eggs, milk or microwave items. The shop also has some ice cream and cookies to purchase. This was a fun treat after a days swim.
  5. The resort has a big size pool with a nice sand area for the little kids to build sand castles and play. It also has a shallow end for young kids and deeper ends for older kids. It also has a volleyball net which is fun. It is large enough to bring your own pool toys and play. The lazy river is huge and they provide free tubes to use as well. The water was nicely heated in the cooler months.
  6. When booking your stay, be aware that weeknights are a ton cheaper than the weekend nights. If you stay Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights you will be paying a few hundred more PER night. So if possible stay the week days to save on money.
  7. Another great way to save on money at the resort is to share a big room with another family. If you are going with friends and family anyway, check out their Royal Tahitian room where you have two separate suites joined together. It was cheaper for us to do that than to get our own suite.

5 Side Hustles That Can Net You Big Bucks

Who needs some more money? I think I just heard a collective “I do, I do.”  We could all use some extra cash, am I right? Well, lucky for us there are some sweet side hustles out there right now that can help to get us the cash we need to help pay bills, add to savings, pay for holidays or prepare for Christmas!

Here are 5 side hustles that you can do now that will net you big bucks:

  • Uber or Lyft.  If you have a car that fits the description of what these companies allow, you can make some pretty good money as an Uber or Lyft driver.  I actually had my first experience with Uber this weekend and each of the drivers that I had over the weekend talked about how they loved the extra money that they make.
  • Retail.  The holidays are coming up, which means lots of seasonal retail jobs will be opening.  I have a relative that did this last year and not only made good money on the side, but she also got an employee discount and was able to bring down the cost of Christmas for her!
  • Dog walker.  Do you have any idea how much it costs to pay someone to walk your dog?  In some busy metropolitan areas, dog walkers average $25 per dog, per day or more!  That money starts to add up when you are walking multiple dogs. I recently read that some dog walkers make six figures!
  • Flipping.  Next time you head into the thrift shop, keep your eyes out for rock bottom deals and take them home and list them for sale.  Last week I saw a solid oak table at Goodwill for $4.99, a friend bought it and immediately resold it for $100.
  • Freelance Writing.  I am a freelance writer for a living, I know that you can make good money doing it. You need to know where to sell your work and you need to be good at what you do.

Good luck, my friends!

5 Things to Do Before Asking for a Raise at Work

Do you feel like you are underpaid?  Or maybe you have been being a rock star at work and you feel that it is time for you to make more?  Are you feeling nervous to approach your boss about the company giving you more money?

So what do you do?  Do you know? If not, I am going to help you out a little bit. I am going to give you a couple of the best things you should do in advance of requesting your raise so that you go into it strong.

Here are 5 things to do before asking for a raise at work:

  • Know the worth of your position.  Do a little bit of research to see how much others in your position earn, both at your company and others.  Knowing this information before you go in is good information to have for arguments.
  • Have realistic expectations.  If you work as a cashier, you are likely not going to get paid the wages of a doctor.  You need to make sure the number you are asking for makes sense for your position.
  • Don’t go in there and simply ask for more money.  Go in there and sell yourself, your work, and your abilities so that you make them want to give you money instead of questioning whether or not you should get more money.
  • Put in your request for a meeting early.  Despite what you may believe, waiting until your annual review is not always the best thing to do to wait for a raise.  Oftentimes, your wage decision is made before your performance review anyway, so getting in there early is a wise decision.
  • Do it!  I know it is nerve-wracking, but you can do it!  Just jump in and do it! The worst that can happen is you get a no. But, you won’t ever know if you don’t try for it!

5 Tips for Saving on Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, my friends!  If you haven’t already, it is probably time to start shopping for your Thanksgiving dinner prep.  What?! Shopping now for Thanksgiving? Yep, I said it. Don’t shoot the messenger folks, it needed to be said.

So, once you are ready to jump into Thanksgiving prep, here are 5 tips for saving on Thanksgiving Dinner:

  1. Shop early.  I know I already mentioned this, this is why I am writing this.  Shopping early will help you to save money on your Thanksgiving shopping list.  This is especially true because stores often offer a different sale price each week for holiday staples.  Take advantage of these deals, my friends!
  2. Use coupons.  Coupon, coupon, coupon!  There is a reason that you visit our site often, COUPONS!!! Coupons are always a great way to save money on groceries, Thanksgiving is no exception.
  3. Accept offers of help.  If someone offers to bring a side dish or dessert, accept those offers!!! No reason for you to spend all of the money and time!  Don’t be afraid to loosen up your control of the meal planning. The more cooks the merrier.
  4. Stick with the basics.  Mashed potatoes, turkey, rolls.  The main staples of Thanksgiving are actually quite inexpensive.  No need to make lots of detailed, involved recipes to keep your guests happy.
  5. Skip the holiday decor.  There is no reason to get your house decorated for the specific holiday.  Just clean up, light a couple of candles and let the meal do the decorating!  There is no need to spend a bunch of money to decorate for just a couple of hours.  Even if you use dollar store decor, it adds up!

How do you keep from breaking the bank during the holidays?  I would love to hear any other ideas and points of view!

5 Tips for Saving on Autumn Decor

Have you begun decorating for the season yet?  I know I have been scrolling through my Instagram feed and seeing all of the beautifully decorated homes of my friends and those that I follow and wow do they look beautiful!  I have been on a bit of a spending freeze though, so I am avoiding making purchases in order to decorate my home, plus, I’ve been too busy to focus on it. I do know though, that I don’t need a lot of money to do it, so I am going to get started and create an autumn wonderland over here!  If you are ready to do the same, here are 5 tips for saving on autumn decor that you can implement now to get your place looking great this fall!

  1. Use nature.  If you have any trees in your yard, head on out to pick up some of the leaves.  You can try them and place them into a vase or decorative bowl on your table or counter.
  2. Buy pillow covers.  Check out Amazon to find sweet deals on pillow covers to change up the design of your current throw pillows.  You can often find them for just a couple of bucks each.
  3. Use simple items.  You can make no changes whatsoever to your living room, yet toss an orange or brown throw over the back of your sofa and you all of the sudden have an autumn themed decor in your room.  Throw blankets can often be bought for just a couple of dollars.
  4. Use food.  A bowl of squash as a centerpiece on the table is a perfect autumn decorative piece.  Not only is it budget friendly, but it is also useful. You are going to use the veggies anyway, so the money is not wasted.
  5. Make it smell pretty.  Scents are an amazing way to decorate.  No, the smell of your house doesn’t change the appearance of your home, but it does change how someone feels when they walk into your home.  Candles are relatively inexpensive, as are incense and essential oils. Stick with autumn food scents, such as pumpkin spice, apple pie, etc.  It will bring about a sense of fall in your home.

5 Tips for Getting Your Car Ready for the Cooler Weather

I know that we have recently talked about Winterizing your home and the steps that you can take to get that done, but did you know that you should do the same thing for your car? That’s right! Your car needs help during the Winter time too! If you have no idea where to begin here are 5 tips for getting your car ready for the cooler Winter did you can implement now to save yourself some trouble this Winter.

  • Take it in for an oil change. This is just a good time to remember to do your regularly scheduled maintenance, plus while your you are there the mechanics will likely tell you if anything else is wrong before you take it out on the cold Winter roads.
  • Check your tires.  When the roads are icy and snowy, is when you need all of the traction you can get. Make sure to see how much traction you have left on your tires and consider getting studded tires or Winter rated traction tires
  • Have your battery tested. The cold morning starts are really hard on your battery, that is why the wintertime is when you will most often have to deal with replacing dead batteries. Take your car into an auto parts store, or a tire and lube shop to have your battery tested.
  • Check your antifreeze levels. Before the cold weather hits is the best time to check the anti-freeze levels in your car. If you leave your car with not enough, you may find that the water inside your engine will freeze the water in your motor and break the entire thing.
  • Invest in Winter chains. This is a safety issue.  f you live in an area that receives a fair amount of snow, or if you plan to travel in the snow you really need to invest in a pair of Winter chains. I do recommend looking on the Facebook marketplace or other thrift and resale sites. Otherwise, you go to any major retailer or tire shop, etc to find a pair that will fit your vehicle.

5 Tips for Getting Your House Ready for Winter

Last night I was getting ready for bed and have a severe freeze warning pop across my phone screen. Winter prep has begun, my friends! Have you begun getting your home ready for the cooler weather ahead? What type of winterization prep do you typically do in your home?

If it’s been a while, or if you were a new homeowner you may be wondering where to start. Here are 5 tips for getting your house ready for Winter that you can start now to beat the cold.

  • Buy better curtains.  Did you know that you can buy insulated curtains that are built to keep it warmer in your house so that you are not fighting the cold air that comes in from around your windows?  I always use these in the winter!
  • Wrap your outside pipes. I recently bought faucet covers for like a dollar on clearance at Walmart. With these, I will be insulating and covering my outdoor faucets so that I don’t have to worry about when it freezes. It’s nice to do this now instead of remembering I at 11 o’clock some night that be better wrap your pipes before they break.
  • Remove window unit air conditioners. I know that they are easy to forget about, but now is the time to remove those window unit air conditioners they get put in for the hot summer days. These units let a lot of cold air into your house.
  • Dress warmer. Yeah I know this really doesn’t have much to do with your house itself, but if you make it a habit to wear warmer clothes around your house you won’t have to keep the heat turned u as high to keep it warm.
  • Have a energy audit done. Call your power company and find out how long it would take them to schedule and energy audit at your house. These audits help find cold air leaks and other issues that might causing your high heat bill.

5 Tips for Saving on Halloween Decor

Have you begun decorating for Halloween yet?  I have been seeing some adorable, fun and super scary decorations as I drive through my neighborhood lately.  Some of the decorations I know cost a lot, but I also have seen some awesome decorative pieces that look awesome, but also look like they are probably homemade.  I am going on vacation for a week right before Halloween, so I haven’t put too much focus on my home this Halloween, but I have in the past and I know how to decorate on the cheap!

If you are looking for ways to get your house ready to scare up some neighbors, but you don’t want to spend a fortune, here are 5 tips for saving on Halloween decor:

  1. Use nature.  This is my favorite way to decorate for Halloween!  Use straw, old corn stalks, dead grass, etc.
  2. Use old clothes.  Last year I used some of my husband’s old work clothes and filled them up with straw and other dried vegetation I found around my property.  I then put a fake pumpkin as the head. This literally cost me $0.99 total and it got lots of compliments.
  3. Check out the dollar store.  The dollar store is a great place to find inexpensive holiday decor.
  4. Use food.  Pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins.  Is there any better Halloween decor? I mean, Halloween is all about the pumpkins, am I right?  Check out your local farm stand for inexpensive pumpkins.
  5. Thrift Shop.  The thrift store is a great place to shop for Halloween.  From decor to costumes, you can find some really great deals on just about everything for this holiday.  I like to go to my local Goodwill for this because they actually carry quite a few brand new items at a great price.

The Perfect Pumpkin Roll Recipe

(Recipe & pic by Me’ls Kitchen Cafe)

Oh pumpkin. This time of year I eat, sleep and breath pumpkin. Yes, it’s that good. If you haven’t tried a pumpkin roll you are really missing out. It’s just the right amount of sweet and fluff. This recipe is one of my all time favorites and my family sure enjoys it too. It does take a bit of time and love, but in the end it will all be worth it.

Ingredients:

Cake:

  • 1 cup (7.5 ounces) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (3.75 ounces) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Filling:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened (see note)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup (4 ounces) powdered sugar
  • Additional powdered sugar, for dusting

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 15- by 10-inch jelly roll pan. Cut parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pan and leave an inch overhang on each of the short ends of the pan. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of the jelly roll pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sugar, flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, eggs and pumpkin until just combined and no dry streaks remain.
  3. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Sprinkle the walnuts, if using, on top of the mixture. Bake for 14-15 minutes until edges pull away from the sides of the pan and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  4. Lay a large kitchen towel on the counter top (it is best to use a dishtowel without any texture – a tea towel or flour sack towel works best). Spread a dusting of powdered sugar all over the towel.
  5. When the cake comes out of the oven, turn the pan upside down on the powdered sugar-laden towel so the cake falls out onto the towel. Peel off the parchment paper, being careful not to tear the cake roll.
  6. Starting at one of the short ends, roll the pumpkin cake up with the towel and let it cool completely while rolled up.
  7. While the roll is cooling, mix the cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar together with an electric mixer until it is light and creamy.
  8. Once the cake roll is cooled completely, unroll (but don’t flatten out the cake roll; it’s ok if it’s slightly curved still), and with an offset spatula, carefully spread the filling in an even layer over the cake.
  9. Roll up the cake without the towel and place it in the refrigerator, covered with plastic wrap, to firm up, at least an hour.
  10. Dust the top with powdered sugar, if desired, and cut into slices.

Enjoy!

Pumpkin Picking, Candy Buying & Costume Making – What Are Your Price Points?

Hopefully by now you’ve been preparing and saving for Christmas but what about Halloween? This one always sneaks up on me and if it’s not budgeted out, can really drain the wallet. But I’m here to let you know that doesn’t need to happen! You can still price compare and save money for Halloween when you know your price points and what to look for.

Lets first talk costumes and how you can really save the most. If you’re really planning ahead, the best time to buy your costumes is after Halloween when everything goes on clearance. I have to admit, that’s what we did this year (or technically last year). We headed to Target and snagged this year’s costumes, last year during the clearance sales. While their minds have changed, they’ve actually been ok with the fact that we’ve already selected what they’re wearing and have them ready to go. I ended up spending only $10 for 3 super hero costumes! Score!

But what about last year’s costumes? Did you only wear them once or twice? Do they still look brand new? Still have the packaging? If so, I thought I would remind you that you could actually get this year’s halloween costumes FREE — if you sell last year’s gently used costumes! Or host a Halloween costume SWAP with some friends!

Now that we’ve talked costumes, lets touch on candy. This really depends on what kind you like to hand out but if you’re looking to save the most money you don’t want to pay more than $.18 per ounce. So pull out your phones and calculate it out to make sure you’re getting a deal.

What about pumpkins? Do you guys have the tradition of picking the perfect pumpkin out in the fields or do you just find the best one in the bins at Walmart? While the experience of picking your own pumpkins is fun, it’s not the cheapest way to go about getting pumpkins. So look over your budget, talk it out and decide if the experience it worth it for your family. BUT you want to try and find pumpkins that are priced at or under $.30 per pound. That gets you a 10 pound pumpkin for $3.

Just like in years past, the closer we get to Halloween the more we’ll see the price drop on pumpkins. So if you can hold out and buy your pumpkins later on, I recommend do it! I hope you’re all set and ready for a great Halloween building memories with your family while saving as much money as possible!

5 Tips for Saving on Halloween Costumes

Halloween will be here before you know it!  For many of us that means that it is time to pinch pennies and start shopping for those Halloween costumes for the kids.  If you are not careful though, those costumes can end up costing you a lot. Did you know that the average American spends over $70 on Halloween?  No thank you!

I have 3 kids and I will be spending less than $20 total for Halloween costumes this year.  How will I do that? Well, here are my 5 tips for saving on Halloween Costumes:

  1. Start now – Truthfully to save the most money, we should have started sooner, but if not, that’s okay!  Hope is not lost. What you DO NOT want to do though is wait until the last minute when all of the cheap, good costumes are gone and you are forced to pay big money for a costume you don’t necessarily want.
  2. Shop your closets – Before you head to the store, look through your closets for any costumes that you may still have in there, or any of your regular clothes that will work toward your costume.
  3. Borrow – Get together with other mama friends and see what costumes you all may be able to swap with one another.  You may find the perfect costume and not have to pay a penny!
  4. Use your own makeup – Okay, you may not be able to create Frankenstein with the contents of your makeup bag, but my guess is, you can pull off some good eyeliner tricks with what you have.
  5. Shop used – I cannot even tell you the benefits of shopping used for Halloween costumes, but I can sure try.  It’s cheaper, it makes more sense since you are wearing this ONE time, you are doing your part to save the environment, the list really does go on.  Seriously though, we are here to talk about saving money and you can buy a costume for literal pennies on the dollar shopping used. You can hit up thrift stores, or even check out the FB marketplace for cheap costumes.

Having a great Halloween doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money, just be smart about how you shop and you can have a blast for very little out of pocket.

5 Tips for Saving on Health Care Expenses

Health care is one of the biggest expenses a family deals with.  Between the monthly cost of insurance to the costs at the pharmacy and even your doctor’s office co-pay, healthcare costs can take a huge chunk out of your budget.   It doesn’t have to break you though. There are some things that you can do to save on your health care expenses.

If you would like to see how you can get your health care spending under control, here are 5 tips for saving on health care expenses:

  • Consider a higher deductible.  Choosing a higher deductible will likely save you money on your monthly insurance bill.  That being said, do not always choose the higher deductible plan to save money. If you have more doctor’s visits or you have health issues that you are concerned about, you can end up paying more out of pocket this way.

  • Read over your healthcare policy. Make sure that you are knowledgeable with your policy before you make healthcare decisions.  For example, you need to be sure to go to a doctor that is covered under your plan in order to pay less.

  • Exercise.  Oh, I know you are tired of hearing about it, but you need to be exercising in order to save money on your healthcare!  The healthier you are, the less you go to the doctor. Also, the healthier you are, the less your health insurance rates will be.  Exercising more will likely make you far healthier.
  • Ask for generic prescriptions.  If you use prescription medications, you can ask for the generic versions of the medicines to save a lot of money.
  • Eat a healthy diet.  A healthy diet can make a huge difference in your health.  Similar to exercise, your diet can make a tremendous difference in your health.  It can help to prevent high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and more.
