Winter-Proofing Tips for Your Home

Is your home ready for the cold weather of winter?   I’m sure you already know this, but there are things that you can do to your home to make it better prepared for the harsh weather conditions that come in wintertime and that will help you to save money on your heating costs.

Here are some of my favorite winter-proofing tips for your home that have helped me save money over the years.

  • Use a programmable thermostat.  If you don’t yet have one, be sure and buy a programmable thermostat and use it.  These help to prevent major shifts in the temperature in your home and keep the bills from skyrocketing.
  • Use a draft snake.  A draft snake can be a rolled up towel, or a sand filled piece of fabric that you place in front of your exterior doors to keep out the cold.
  • Bubble Wrap on your windows.  I’m sure you probably think it will look funny, but if you tape bubble wrap on your windows, you can prevent a loss of up to 30% of the warm air in your home, which could potentially save a massive amount of money over the course of a year.
  • Reverse your ceiling fans.  Did you know that reversing the direction of your ceiling fan can adjust the temperature in the room significantly?
  • Put your A/Cs away.  Do you still have A/C units in your windows?  It’s time to take them out, because these create a big loss of warm air throughout your home.

I don’t know about you, but I am excited about the cooler weather and I am all about getting my home ready for it. These are all super inexpensive and easy to do winter-proofing tips, but there are lots more tips out there!  What are your favorite, simple winter proofing tips?

The Best Items to Buy in September

Did you know that there is a hidden secret on the things you buy throughout the year?  That’s right. Depending on what items you are buying, there is usually a better time during the year to buy those particular things.  Right now, for example, we can focus on the best items to buy in September, even if the month is almost half-up.

So, if you are ready to do some shopping, here are the best items to buy in September to save the most money:

  • Bicycles.  New model year bikes are coming out this month, which means that it is the best time to find deals on last year’s models.  And let’s face it, the new year’s models aren’t going to be any better than last year, so save yourself some money!
  • Bedding and mattresses.  Labor Day is the kickoff to sales for mattress stores nationwide.  These sales tend to last the entire month, so you can find some really good deals!  Bedding prices fall to complement the lowered prices of the mattresses.
  • Furniture.  Again, Labor Day prices on furniture can be ridiculously low.  Take advantage now to score some seriously deep discounts. (I just bought a VERY nice brand new leather living room set for less than $1000 at one of these sales.  Note: Don’t discount doorbusters.
  • Apple products.  New Apple products are about to hit showrooms.  Now is when you are going to find steep discounts on the older versions of Apple iPhones, iPads, MacBooks and more.
  • Appliances.  Looking for new appliances?  Right now is the best time to find appliance deals because, again, new models are coming soon.  Be sure and stroll through the clearance section and see what kind of steals you can find on the appliances that you are wanting to upgrade.’
  • Camping gear.  Camping season is over for most people and the stores are trying to clear their shelves of their camping and other summertime outdoor supplies.  I once bought a 10 person tent for $89 (75% off) during September.

What’s your favorite deal you have ever scored in the month of September?

5 Birthday Party Ideas Your Kids Will Love

Birthday parties can get a little routine and dare I say, boring? My kids always want something different and unique, but I’m just not that creative every year! We’ve come up with 5 different ideas that aren’t your normal games/present and cake parties. This will keep the kids busy the whole time!

  1. Nerf War Games. If you have boys, you know that Nerf parties are so fun. They love the energy and competition. If you are on a budget just gather up Nerf guns and make your own Nerf zone, divide into two teams and start the war. If you have some money set for the party, you could take the kids to an actual Nerf/dart gun arena.
  2. Swim/Beach Party. This is always a popular type of party. If you are near the beach, then use it! If you aren’t then find a local pool you could take the kids to.
  3. Tea/Dress up party. If you have young girls, have them dress up in their best and throw a tea party. They could even bring their favorite stuffed animal.
  4. Bounce House Mania. This one could get a little expensive, but it’s super easy to do. Rent your favorite bounce house and invite the friends over. You don’t have to do a lot with this party since the company usually will come set it up and take it down. That’s my kind of party!
  5. Cook it up party. If you have a young chef then this would be super fun. Create a menu and let the kids help make their meal. Then after you could all eat it or even invite the moms to come join you for the final creation. Let the kids serve their moms and all enjoy cake afterwards. This is one they won’t forget.

The Baby Steps Explained

Are you working on your own debt free journey?  Are you doing your best to make your past bad financial decisions go away?  You have likely heard about Dave Ramsey and his “baby steps.” I am not affiliated with Dave Ramsey, but I am a fan of is and have been working on putting his principles to use with my own finances.

If you are curious enough to look into it, here is a short explanation of the baby steps that his followers live by and why they may (or may not) work for you:

  • Step 0: Take care of your four walls.  This means to bring your rent or mortgage current along with your utility bills.  This means power, water, sewer, etc. This is not your cable and credit cards.
  • Step 1: Build up an emergency fund of $1,000.
  • Step 2: Pay off all of your debt excluding your home.
  • Step 3: Build up a fully funded emergency fund (typically three to six months of expenses).
  • Step 4: Invest 15% of your income into retirement plans.
  • Step 5: Work on building a college fund for your children.
  • Step 6: Time to Pay off your house!
  • Step 7: Build wealth and give.

Breaking these steps down in this form is a great way to minimize how overwhelmed you can become by the entire process.  It is easier to focus on one thing at a time, making your success more likely.

Do any of you follow Dave Ramsey’s plan?  I would love to hear about any of you who have found success utilizing his budgeting tips and programs.  Or, have you found a different direction that has proven successful for you?

Debt payoff is not a one-size-fits-all situation.  What works great for one person is likely not going to work exactly the same for someone else.  This is why I love hearing about everyone’s experiences in their budgeting, saving, investing and debt payoff journeys.

5 Side Hustle Ideas That Require No Start Up

Are you looking for ways to make more money outside of your regular job?  Or, are you a stay at home parent looking for ways that you can help contribute to the household budget?  Then you, my friend, need to start looking for your side hustle. A side hustle is an income source outside of what your normally do and can be incredibly lucrative, or, it can simply help you to boost your savings or help pay off debts.  It’s good though, when you can start these side hustles without putting out money in order to do so.

If you are looking for ways to earn some cash, without spending any cash, here are 5 side hustle ideas that require no start up:

  1. Selling stuff.  Buying and selling is a great way to earn cash, but an even better way to do this is by selling the stuff you already have and don’t use.  Use the money that you make selling your stuff to invest into buying more stuff to sell. Use apps such as OfferUp, Letgo, FB Marketplace or more as platforms to sell.
  2. Blogging.  Okay this one isn’t exactly free and blogging is not a get rich quick plan, but you can make money doing it.  It does require true work and a time commitment, but the initial start up can be just a couple of dollars per month.
  3. Personal assistant.  You can offer to be a personal assistant for professionals in your area for no start up at all.  You might find yourself answering emails, returning phone calls, shopping, etc.
  4. Housecleaning.  If you are good at cleaning, why not offer your services as a house or office cleaner?  You can use your client’s cleaning supplies, or the stuff you already own.
  5. Resume writer.  Did you know that there are people who pay others to create their resumes for them?  Yep! As long as you own a computer, you can do this!

5 Reasons to Stop Keeping Up with the Joneses

Keeping up with the Joneses is a trap for many Americans.  It is what keeps many different families in debt. Worrying about having the nicest house, nicer cars and any and every other nice thing that you can just so you don’t feel like you are lesser than them. I’m a big believer in not caring too much about what others think of what I have, what I drive or where I live, but even I have found myself “keeping up with the Joneses” when it comes to my children.  When all of the other kids at school had brand new iPhone Xs, I decided to break down and get my daughter an iPhone (it was an SE, but still), I always make sure they have name brand clothes too (bought second hand typically) because truth be told, kids are mean to kids that don’t have nice clothes. I have always maintained that we don’t have to spend a lot to have the same nice things. That being said, I am realizing that although I don’t spend a lot on this, I am doing my kids a disservice by following this routine. There are plenty of reasons though to not live this lifestyle though and here’s why.

Here are 5 reasons to stop keeping up with the Joneses that will make you happier in the long run:

  1. Non-stop competition.  The competition never ends and that is, honestly, exhausting.  I don’t know about you, but I really just like to be able to relax sometimes and not worry about others.
  2. It’s expensive.  There is just something so very calming about not living paycheck to paycheck. If you choose to live a less expensive lifestyle, you can do this!
  3. It doesn’t teach your children well.  Do you want your kids lives run by consumerism?  I know that I don’t. I want their lives run by so much more than just this and I am trying to teach them that.
  4. It teaches entitlement. Entitlement is destroying the behaviors of young people everywhere, I want to be a part of the generation that ends this type of behavior.

What are your thoughts on this?  I thought the hear people’s ideas of this and the best ways to go about it.

Start Now for a Frugal Christmas

As of the day of this post, Christmas is just 108 days.  108 days is not very long my friends, you need to start thinking about Christmas right now if you don’t want it to stretch your budget to an uncomfortable degree, I know I don’t at all! The trick is to start your Christmas shopping and saving right now to get the best savings out of your gift giving.

Here are my tips for shopping smart for a frugal Christmas:

  • Shop at discount stores.  Stores like Ross, TJMaxx, Tuesday Mornings, and more all have a variety of items for a really great deal.  You can find housewares, clothes, toys, and the list goes on. Oftentimes too, these items are extremely cheap compared to at other stores.
  • Shop clearance.  Clearance sections are amazing for rock bottom deals.  Combine clearance deals with a discount store and your prices can’t be beat!  I was shopping at Tuesday morning the other day and found some super cool LED jump ropes that cost $10+ on Amazon for just $1.29 on clearance.  I bought the rest of their stock and now have Christmas gifts for my nieces and nephew.
  • Coupon.  Yes, you can find coupons for more than just food!  I have used coupons to find deals on toys, clothes and even cologne before.  All of which make great Christmas gifts.
  • Thrift shops.  You would be amazed at the amount of brand new stuff you find at thrift shops.  Our local Goodwill for example, sells a lot of Target overstock products at pennies on the dollar.  Well worth a trip when you can find brand new shoes for a $1 or a new video game for $4.

What is your favorite way to keep Christmas frugal?  We would love to hear all of your tips and tricks!

Quick and Easy Dump Crock Pot Meals!

It’s soccer season and for us that means lots of game nights with little time to cook dinner and get it on the table. So I’ve thrown together some dump freezer meals! What is that you might ask? Basically, you take all of your ingredients and “dump” them into a Ziploc Gallon Bag and freeze them. Then when it is time, you can take all of the contents, throw it into the crock pot and cook. No effort on your part. And if you are doing it during the first few weeks after a new baby or your busy months, it’s easy enough that any member of your family can do it- so you don’t have to. So here are a few of our family’s favorite dump recipes.

Creamy Ranch Chicken

  • 5-6 Chicken Breasts
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 packet of Ranch Dip Mix
  • 1 packet of Zesty Italian Mix
  • 8 oz box of Cream Cheese

How to Save on Halloween Decor

Yes, my friends, I am still focused on Halloween over here! I don’t know about you, but I am kind of over summer.  I am ready for cooler weather, sweaters, hoodies, boots and all things pumpkin! Also, of course, Halloween! That is why I am so focused on saving money on Halloween, because I like to get started early and I like to save money.

We recently moved into a new home and I am all about decorating it!  As it turns out, contrary to popular opinion, I don’t have to spend a fortune to do so! Here are some of my favorite tips on how to save on Halloween decor:

  • Shop at the dollar store.  The dollar store has some amazing holiday decor for such a good deal.  Seriously, you are going to be shocked at how many different decor pieces that you can buy for just $1 each.
  • Goodwill and thrift shops.  Why not buy used decor? It looks the same, but costs a LOT less.  I love finding good holiday decor pieces at thrift shops and these decor pieces are often are quite high quality.
  • Use what you have.  A couple of years ago, for Halloween, we created a scarecrow using my husband’s old giveaway clothes and filled it with hay, old backyard grass and other dried vegetation that came from our backyard.  It looked awesome, we got tons of compliments and it didn’t cost me anything.

What are your favorite budget-friendly tricks for decorating for Halloween?  I would love to throw some new ideas into the mix to go in with my new home this year.

How to Save on Halloween Costumes

I know we just talked about Halloween yesterday, so I figured we can chat about a couple more ways that we can save money on one of the most expensive holidays there are!  Did you know that the average family spends $100 or more on Halloween candy, costumes and decorations? I don’t know about you, but I still see $100 as being a lot of money.  A lot of money that can be used elsewhere. So, I am doing my best to get those numbers down, my friends! Get them down so low that you can completely enjoy Halloween without that ever lurking stressful feeling of having spent too much money.

Here are some of my favorite tips on how to save on Halloween costumes:

  • Watch this website closely.  Just like with the Halloween candy, we will be posting any awesome costume deals we find, so don’t miss out.
  • Start shopping early.  Get an early start to find the best deals.  This is especially true when you shop online.
  • Shop second hand.  You can buy costumes for pennies on the dollar, by shopping at thrift stores.  Some people have issues using second hand stuff, but really all you need to do is wash it up and it is as good new.  I almost always buy our costumes from Goodwill and it always works out great. Another good thing about Goodwill specifically, is that they actually sell quite a few brand new costumes at much cheaper than retail.
  • Make your own.  If you are crafty at all, check out Pinterest and find thousands of Halloween costume ideas that you can make on your own.  Be sure to choose a budget-friendly one and not one that is going to costs hundreds of dollars worth of materials.

What are your favorite ways to stock up and save on Halloween costumes?  Have you ever made your own? I would love to see examples.

How to Save on Candy for Trick or Treaters

Halloween will be here before we know it!  What are you planning on handing out to the trick or treaters that will be coming to your door?  Yes, candy and goodies can get expensive, especially if you live in a busy neighborhood, but it doesn’t have to.

Here are some of my favorite how to save on candy for trick or treaters tricks:

  • Watch this website.  We will be posting any awesome candy deals we find of course, so make sure you check back here often to share in the best deals.
  • Start now.  Do not, I repeat, do not wait until the days before Halloween to buy your candy.  It is imperative that you start now or else you will be paying top dollar for your candy.
  • Coupon.  I am betting you made your way to this website because you were looking for coupon deals, am I right?  Well, my friends, nothing has changed. We are still all about saving in whatever ways we can and couponing is a huge part of that.  That means that I always check the couponing tab on this website for new and updated coupons and during Halloween that is no exception.  Candy companies almost always release new candy coupons for the holiday. Also, don’t forget to check out the sunday paper and clip any ecoupons from your store as well!  You can save a lot this way.
  • Buy in bulk.  Do you have a grocery store near you that sells any foods in bulk?  You may be surprised to find that many of these types of stores have a huge candy selection in their bulk food section.  Sometimes they have some of the favored Halloween classics, but sometimes they have other kinds of candies that aren’t always kids favorites (butterscotch, taffy, etc).  Depending on what type of candy you like to give out, this may be a great way for you to save.
  • Shop drugstores.  Drugstores such as CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc often have smoking good deals on full-sized candy bars.  If you want to be the favorite trick or treating house on the block, you might consider watching for these deals and stocking up.  I recently saw full-size candy bars for $0.24 each. I think I could stock up for that price!

How to Save Money on Homecoming Expenses

School has started or is days away for some, and that means that high school sports are in full swing and soon our social media feeds will be full of pictures of young men and women dressed to the nines in their homecoming dance attire.  These are memories that should be enjoyed for a lifetime, but the costs for these dances and activities, should not be paid for a lifetime.

If you have a teen, you should check out these tips on how to save money on homecoming expenses and get started now so you are not forced to pay big money last minute:

  • Shop early.  I did some last minute back to school shopping for my teenage daughter yesterday and spotted so much clearance it was crazy!  Mixed into these clearance racks were quite a few formal dresses too! You just never know what you may find out there right now before the formal season really hits.
  • Shop at discount stores.   Discount stores such as Ross and TJMaxx often have great deals on formal attire at a significantly lower price than your typical formal stores do.  You might be quite pleasantly surprised by what you find.
  • Shop second hand.  Seriously, high-end thrift shops and sometimes even stores like Goodwill have phenomenal deals on formal wear.  Don’t worry! Oftentimes these dresses are from the last 6 months to a year so you know they won’t be out of style.
  • Go online.  You guys!! Amazon has some amazing deals on formal dresses. I once helped my sister in law find a formal dress on Amazon for $24 that looked stunning!  Just be sure to start early so that you know that you get the right fit, etc.
  • Shop bridal.  While shopping for my sister in laws wedding dress a couple of years ago, we were at David’s Bridal.  While she was trying stuff on, I decided to spend some time looking through the clearance racks and I found some really great formal dresses for $50 and under.  It’s worth a look!

When it comes to formal wear shopping, it can be done cheaply, I just suggest you give yourself time to do it!  Make a fun shopping day out of it with your teen and have fun! You only get this time with them for a short while.  Make it fun!
