Do you have teens at home? Do you feel like they are constantly asking for money? If you want to help encourage your kids to start becoming more independent and get them earning money for themselves, you should check out this awesome list of jobs that your teen can do this Summer:
Lawn Care – People are busy, you know that. So why not encourage your teen to head on over to the neighbors’ house and offer lawn care services. Not only is it a great way for them to earn money, but it is a great help to the neighbors if they don’t have to stress about working in the yard after they come home from a hard day’s work. Lawn care would include mowing the lawn, raking leaves and yard debris, pulling weeds, etc.
Babysitting – Many of us got our working start doing babysitting jobs for neighbors or friends of the family. If your teen is good with kids, then they should reach out and offer their babysitting services either throughout the workdays during the summer or on evenings and weekends for parents to get a much deserved break once in awhile. Teens can typically charge several dollars per hour per kid.
Housecleaning – Many of us would gladly hire a helping hand when it comes to cleaning our homes. I know I would be willing to pay a teen to come and help me with laundry, because yuck.I hate folding laundry. If your teen is decent at housework, they can easily offer their assistance. Even if it is just specific jobs such as window washing, laundry, etc.
Dog Walking – Our pups need to exercise and if you have ever had to pay a service for it, you know it is very expensive. If your teen likes dogs and you have friends, family or neighbors with dogs, you might consider having them offer to walk their dogs during the day in the Summertime. Not only is it great for the dog to get exercise, but dogs are less likely to create messes in the house if they are able to get some energy out.
Are there any other income earning ideas that you can think of for teens to do during the Summer?
If you’ve noticed recently that Amazon as added sales taxes to your orders, you’re not alone. Starting April 1st, Amazon will be collecting sales tax in Hawaii, Idaho, Maine and New Mexico. That means that 45 states will now be collecting sales tax from Amazon purchases. So what’s going on with the last 5 states? Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no sales tax, while Alaska, doesn’t have a statewide tax, but it does have municipal sales taxes. Why did Amazon make the sudden change to add sale tax?
Typically, an online retailer like Amazon, only has to collect sales tax in states where they have stores physically. But this cost states $17.2 billion in lost sales taxes last year. After some controversy and court cases, Amazon will no longer be tax free. If you want to read more about the FAQs on sales tax from Amazon head to their page here.
What do you think of adding sales tax to your Amazon purchases? Will that affect your shopping on Amazon in the future?
If you haven’t heard back in February of this year JCPenney announced they’d be closing down 138 stores over the next few months with closures starting is June. What does that mean? Unfortunately lots of job loss but also lots of clearance items! It looks like here in April most of them will start the liquidation process. This is not the first big retailer to announce their closing down this year, we’ve also seen Macy’s and Sears both close down tons of their stores as well. If you missed the news on that, you can read all about it here. But if you live near a JCPenney check to see if they’re on the closing list:

So any of these locations affect you? What are you thoughts on losing your local JC Penney??
Are you on a budget this year? Do you still want to take a vacation? I’ve been there. So how can you vacation while still keeping under your budget? Here are some ideas for you:
Camping – camping is a blast and when done right, can be very budget friendly. Pack food that you already have at home, borrow gear if you don’t have it and, if you are able to, take your trip during the week as some campgrounds have cheaper rates then. Or, better yet, do some primitive camping where there is no fee.
If camping is not your style, look into nearby parks that rent out yurts. They are just like a cabin only cheaper! We stayed in one recently that had TV, fridge, microwave and coffee maker!
Go off season – if you do have a vacation budget, but it’s not as healthy as you want it, consider vacationing off season. One of my favorite vacation resorts offers half priced rates during the off season. That means your lodging budget could be cut in half just for going during a different time! Well worth it to me!
Staycation – become a tourist in your own city. Check out your parks, any rivers or lakes or maybe check out your local theaters during the matinee. Check out any visitors centers and be sure to look into local museums. I recently took my kids to our local county museum and it cost just $7 for our family.
Groupon – check out Groupon for awesome deals on vacations. You will find lots of deals for nearby hotels, resorts and even campgrounds! Also be sure to look for promo codes to save even more.
The point is that just because you are on a budget, that doesn’t mean that life has to stop, you can find ways to be entertained, you can find lots of ways to have fun. Don’t let the budget define you and don’t give up on your savings goals. You’ve got this!
Okay, so I know it seems like we preach to save save save. We do and for good reason. That being said, sometimes it is well worth it to pay extra.
Here are 4 things that you should spend extra on:
Shoes – I know that not everyone agrees with me here, but I hate cheap shoes. Seriously. I hate them. They are uncomfortable and they simply don’t last long. I have been desperate a time or two and bought cheap shoes for my son and they literally last maybe 4 weeks, whereas if I buy him Nike or Adidas shoes, we will get 5-6 months out of them. (and no, 5-6 months isn’t long enough, but he is a 9 year old boy who is really hard on shoes) Still though, I always look for sales and clearance. You would be surprised at the deals I have found on these shoes. I just bought my daughter a pair of LeBron Soldier Basketball shoes brand new for $19.99.
Jeans – About three years ago I got my very first pair of designer jeans. They were amazingly soft and they looked so much cuter than any of the budget brands I had worn in the past. Again, I hit up the clearance sales and even high end thrift stores when shopping for jeans, but I have never looked back and I have never bought cheap jeans again. No regrets.
Jewelry – Okay, truth be told I am not a big jewelry kind of person. I don’t want a ring that costs tens of thousands of dollars, but cheap, fake jewelry just doesn’t cut it. It’s going to turn your finger green, break easily or just look dull within a couple of weeks. If you are on a budget when you are shopping for jewelry, don’t be afraid to shop used. Check Craigslist and pawnshops. Here’s my story: Several years ago I was robbed and my wedding ring (among other things) was stolen, I didn’t have the money to go out and replace it at cost so my husband and I looked around and found a gorgeous wedding set on Craigslist for $200. The lady was no longer engaged and needed the money. She met us at the jewelry store so we could have it examined and appraised. Not only was it real, but it came with the receipt for purchase ($1600) and all of the lifetime warranty paperwork with it.
Dish and laundry soap – Never ever ever do I buy cheap dish or laundry soap as it really is watered down and never lasts as long. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot though, be sure to clip coupons for this expense!
Who needs a little bit of help adding to their savings account? I try to add to my savings account with every paycheck. I don’t even stress that much about how much I am adding each time, I just like to make sure something gets added. I know that I sometimes are harder than others depending on what bills have hit and depending on your job, how work has been this week. If this is one of those weeks that you can use a little creative problem solving in adding to your savings account, check this out.
With these tips, I am going to show you how to add an extra $20 to your savings this week:
How close to retirement are you? Could you use some more money? $20 may not seem like a lot, but the reality is, you can do a lot with $20 saved each week. If you are able to put that $20 into an account that nets you a 5% return on investment, you will have over $13,000 in 10 years or over $36,000 in 20 years. That’s a nice chunk of change to add to your retirement.
Who could use a little bit of extra money this week? I know I can. Between taxes, bills and the kids being home for Spring Break this has been a rough month. Luckily I know that there are some ways for me to find some extra cash, it’s just a matter of doing it.
If you need a cash boost, you can use some or all of these tips to earn an extra $100 this week:
Return those unused items. Do you have items sitting around the house that you have never used? Maybe it’s an article of clothing that didn’t fit or just an item that you mistakenly bought. Many stores have generous return policies so depending on how long you have had it, you may be able to return it for money.
Recycle. Do you live in a bottle redemption state? Go through your house and garage and return all of the bottles and cans that you have. We did this last weekend and found that we had 3 bags full of bottles that were just waiting to be returned. I had my son load them up and we took them in (we were going grocery shopping anyway) and ended up with an extra $7. It’s not a lot, but it’s something, plus I have less clutter at home now!
Skip the Lattes. By now we all know that we can save a tremendous amount of money by forgoing our daily coffee drink, but even if you are unwilling to give it up completely, skipping just once week could save you $25 or more!
Sell your Old Electronics. Are you still holding onto your old phone, tablet, iPod, etc? Why not throw them up for sale? You can do this on Craigslist or FB sale groups and have cash in hand by the end of the day.
Cash in on Name Brand Clothes. Do you wear name brand clothing? I routinely see Miss Me and Silver Jeans selling for $50+ on FB Yard Sale pages! Yep, people pay over $50 for used jeans!! If you have name brand clothing at home that you rarely (if at all) wear, why not get rid of it and put some cash in your pocket instead?
What is your favorite quick money making trick?
Now that it’s officially spring we can look to brightening up our yards and add some color with spring flowers. Often times you think you should wait until after the first frost, but that’s not necessarily the case with flowers. There are a few different spring flowers that you can plant right now and enjoy the colors until it gets warmer.
Spring annuals and perennials that you can plant now:
Do you have any other favorite spring flowers? Comment and let us know!
I’m excited for the beautiful weather we’ve been having and the smell of spring in the air. But with that also means that the yard work is picking up and the flower beds need some attention. Get a head start on your flower beds and lawn care with these few things you can do right now!
Clean your gutters – the leaves fall like crazy through the the end of the year and even though you might have racked up all the ones you could see in the yard don’t forget to check the ones you can see in your gutters. You’re going to want them cleaned out and ready for all the spring and summer showers.
Get rid of the dead plants – if you didn’t have the time to get out and clean up all your flower beds before the winter storms hit chances are you have lots of leaves and dead steams in the flower bed. This is a great time to cut them back and clean it out.
Put down your pr-emergent in your grass – this is the time of year you want try and catch those weeds from popping up in your yard before they actually do. Putting down a pr-emergent will help reduce the amount of weeds that come up this year.
Aerate – Have you aerated your lawn in the last few years? Now is the perfect time to aerate your yard. It allows for the oxygen to reach the roots of your grass allowing for richer color and thicker texture. And who wouldn’t want that in their grass.
Avoid Watering – this might sound a little opposite of things you can do to get your yard ready for summer but it’s recommended that you don’t water your grass until the new root systems have been revitalized and it’s warm enough. So hold off a little while longer before you start watering your grass.
Do you feel like you smile enough? Have you ever really even thought about it? The fact of the matter is, there is much more to smiling than just seeing something cute or funny. There are countless benefits, both health and otherwise that you should smile more often. We are going to focus on just a few of those.
Here, my friends, are five reasons you should smile more:
Now smile everyone and have a beautiful day!
Do you find yourself cutting back on date nights with your sweetheart because of budget issues? I get it. My husband and I went to dinner recently and decided to forget all about our budget and before we know it, we were looking at a $65 check to pay. That was hard to swallow. Will we do that again? Unlikely, but we are in no way going to slow down on our date nights!
Hubby and I were celebrating and deliberately not worrying about the budget because we were splurging that day (that’s okay to do sometimes!!). The point is, that cost that I mentioned above is far from our typical date night and I am going to share with you how we have date nights often and for less than half the cost of our meal the other night.
Check out this list below and you will learn how to cut your date night costs in half with these tips:
What are your favorite tricks for cutting date costs?
If your kids are like mine then it’s SUPER hard to get them to eat their vegetables and greens. They are pretty good with fruits. However, beans, peas, cauliflower, carrots, or any food that resembles vegetables will start a fight. That’s when I decided that I had to be smarter then them. It was time to start sneaking it in!! I was starting to include vegetables into their meatloaf, drinks and even brownies! That way I can feel a little better that they are indeed getting their vegetables. The best way to get down a lot of greens is with smoothies. It’s easy, yummy and refreshing. Here are a few my kids enjoy:

Tomorrow is the big day, so don’t forget to send your kids to school in green so they don’t suffer the repercussions ! Then stop by the store to pick up everything you need to create one of these fun treats for the kids to enjoy when they get home!
Create these St. Patrick”s Day dipped pretzels that are super easy and don’t take a ton of ingredients to create.
If you have a white or vanilla cake mix on hand you could simply die the mixture green and create a cute cupcake for the family to enjoy!
You can pick up some extra large marshmallows like what you could use for camping and dip them in some green candy melts for a yummy treat.
This one is probably my favorite especially if you add some mint extract to them! Yummy!
There are healthy options too! I love the colors in this Rainbow Fruit Salad Parfait! Just grab lots of colorful fruit at the store that your kids would love to dip in whipped cream!
I bet my kids vote would be for this one right here! It’s like two of their favorites in one. You have lucky charms and then rice krispies mixed in one!
Or go all out with this Saint Patrick’s Day Pancakes idea! I love the topping of the lucky charms as well, it’s a great touch!
How will you be celebrating St Patrick’s Day tomorrow? Have any fun traditions you do? Leave a comment below and maybe it will give others ideas of things they can do to make the day special.
Spring is here, Spring is here, Spring is here!!!! Okay, so it’s not quite here yet, but it’s so close and I have seen the sunshine a couple of times! I am so ready to enjoy it! That has me thinking that I am ready to start having some fun, springtime dates with my man!!
We like to keep our dates on a budget though, so I have come up with some ideas for budget friendly Spring date ideas:
Go for an evening stroll. Make this date happen often! It is refreshing to get some fresh air with the one you love, plus if you are anything like me, you have put on a couple of pounds over the Winter and taking a nice stroll around the neighborhood in the evenings is a huge help to start to burn those extra calories and spend time with your honey.
Candlelit dinner. Any dinner is better with candlelight. For real, you can make a boxed Mac & Cheese meal feel romantic by candlelight. Bring out the good dishes, turn down the lights in the house and enjoy your meal with a romantic glow.
Go hiking. Take an easy hike at a local trail or park’s walking trails. The easy walk feels great, plus Springtime is a great time to spot wildflowers! That makes walks even better. If you are in a place to pick those flowers, bring some home with you to put in a vase in your house to spruce things.
Check out Groupon. Login into your Groupon account or app and check out their “things to do” tab. They often have really great deals on museum tours, restaurants, adventurous outings and more! Also, make sure to double check for promo codes so that you can save even more!
Movie Night. Check out your closest Redbox and look for a romantic flick to watch with your special someone. A good old fashioned movie night makes a great reason to cuddle and be close. You can even order in a pizza (look for more promo codes), it doesn’t get much cheaper!
What are your best ideas for a budget friendly date night? I would love more ideas to share with anyone and I would love more ideas to try myself!!
How is the weather where you are? We are still relatively cool with some yucky dreary, dark rain, but we did have one nice day last week and it has got me in Spring mode!!! That means that I have started my Spring cleaning and I am ready to brighten up this house for the coming season. Have you started Springifying your home yet?
I try to keep my household decorating budget down, because let’s face it, that could get pretty ugly if I didn’t reign in my desire to redecorate with each coming season or holiday. That doesn’t mean that I can’t do somethings to help brighten it up though!
Here are 3 ways to get your house ready for Spring without spending a fortune:
Grab some Wildflowers
Flowers are perhaps my favorite thing for bringing Spring into my household decor. Not just any flowers though, I absolutely love wildflowers and they are free! Just take a little walk through your yard or through a local field to find a perfect accent piece for your tables or mantles. Remember that nice day I was telling you about earlier? I took that opportunity to go for a walk and spotted so many wildflowers while I was out, so they are there.
Focus on Your Windows
If you haven’t done your Spring cleaning yet, take this opportunity to start. Clean your windows to better show that beautiful sunshine. Also, if it’s warm enough, open those windows up to let in some fresh air. The difference in your house will be amazing. I did this the other day and the entire house just smelled fresh and clean. Lastly, don’t forget to open up those blinds and curtains and let that light in!
Change up the Bedrooms
I don’t know about you but I have two bed sets for my room. A light, bright one for Spring and Summer and a warmer and darker one for Winter and Fall. Now is the time to bring out the lighter and brighter one. You will feel much better and Spring like walking into a brighter room. If you don’t already have two sets, check out Amazon for some really good bed set deals or head on in to Kohl’s or other department store and check out their clearance section. My sister in law just bought a $400 bed set for $30 yesterday! It can be done!
What is your favorite way to welcome Spring into your home?
