A Family Friendly Road Trip to Las Vegas!

Things are different that’s true but I hope you’re finding ways to still create lasting memories with those you love. One thing we decided to do was take a quick trip down to Las Vegas. For us that’s a good 6 hour drive which isn’t too bad, definitely worth it. And there is plenty to do along the way! Here’s what we pulled over for to enjoy along the way!

Valley of Fire State Park (Overton, Nevada) – this is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and exploring. They have some beautiful red rock formations to see and take pictures of. You will also find some hiking trails. Two of the easier ones are called Rainbow Vista or White Domes Hike which are both less than 1 mile round trip and give you some beautiful scenery. We ended up doing the Fire Wave Trail which was breathtaking. It wasn’t to difficult of a hike and we saw people of all ages along the trial (which is a great trail for social distancing). This was by far our favorite stop and a place we want to go back to and explore more. (Note: it cost $10 to enter the park and takes about 30 minutes off the freeway to get to but I promise, it’s worth it. The Fire Wave Trail is not recommended to hike during the high heat. You will want to stop and use the restrooms as well because there are no restrooms at the trail head. Don’t forget to pack lots of water.)

Parowan Gap Petroglyphs (Cedar City, Utah) – it’s a hidden gem and one if you’re traveling through is worth stopping at if you love history. The kids can enjoy creating their own “stories” using graphics like the ones they see when you get back on the road. It’s a short stop that will be perfect for stretching your legs and getting out of the car.  (Note: this stop is about 20 minutes off the freeway and you can estimate about 30 minutes to look around and explore.)

The Creamery (Beaver, Utah) – At The Creamery, dairy is at the core of everything they do. You’ll find their cute store is filled with different cheese options (we went with the smoked, really yummy) as well as other great accompaniments (think jelly, fudge, syrup and more). Then you can step over to the Creamery Kitchen and enjoy a hot meal with items featuring their locally made cheeses. Don’t forget to snag your ice cream before you get back on the road. Their creamery parlor as all your favorite ice cream mixes and then some. With 24 flavors everyone can find something you’ll love.

Flying J Petting Zoo (Scipio, Utah) – I was so excited when we found this little petting zoo on the side of the road. It’s really in the middle of no where but the perfect place to pull over and stretch your legs for a minute. Unfortunately is was closed when we went through but I saw on their Facebook they should be opening up soon, this month in fact. So if you happen to be taking a spring break down to St. George or Las Vegas this would be so fun to stop at with the kids. We luckily could see some of the animals (not all of them have been moved yet due to the weather) including a camel.  I can’t wait to see what other animals they have the next time we’re in the area.

5 Must See Places Along the Oregon Coast

We recently returned from a trip on the Oregon Coast and it was absolutely breathtaking. It was the perfect destination to escape the heat and see some really beautiful places. It was the first time for our kids and they loved the kite flying, star fish, jumping in the waves and searching for seashells. Along our trip we found some awesome beaches, and not so awesome ones. So, for your next trip, check out these 5 that we would definitely go to again!

  1. Cape Lookout State Park. This was by far our favorite beach to explore ocean life. Biggest tip for this beach is to go at LOW tide. Once on the beach, walk to the cliffs and look at the mussels and if you’re lucky you’ll see a starfish. We saw three! There is a cove to explore and a little waterfall coming off the cliffs. It’s absolutely beautiful. The beach has the perfect sand to play for hours. Spend some time collecting seashells too.
  2. Yaquina Head Lighthouse. I love lighthouses, so this was a must. With Covid-19 going on, this lighthouse was closed, but we could park about a mile from it and walk to it on foot. It was worth the walk. Look above at the beautiful picture we snapped. Definitely windy so bring your hoodie, but so pretty.
  3. Cape Perpetua/ Thor’s Well. This is a place you can go both LOW tide and HIGH tide. Let me explain.  If you want to see Thor’s Well, then you need to plan on going at HIGH tide. That will give you the best view of the water going through the hole and splashing along the cliffs. If you want to see tide pools and walk along the cliffs, then go at LOW tide. Both are fun options. While there, be sure to do a hike at Cape Perpetua.
  4. Mike Miller State Park. This is located in South Beach. It has an educational hike that the kids absolutely loved. It was in trees and so pretty. Along the way they had markers that you could look up on your phone and read about the science behind that forest. Definitely worth it if you’re in that area.
  5. Depoe Bay. If you want to see whales this is the place to be. There is a wall at Depoe Bay that you can stand by and see the whales in the ocean, you don’t even need to be on a boat! Check out the cute town and candy stores. Fun little town to visit.

5 Things You Must Do in San Francisco (With Savings Tips Too!)

I recently returned from a fun adventure in San Francisco, California and I had to share my must-do list. This time I was NOT traveling with kids. However, most of these activities I would take make kids and do them the next time we are there. San Francisco has so much to offer and I loved every second I was there.

  1. Bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. This is a definite must and a highlight of our trip. First, we found an amazing place to rent our bikes. It’s called Basically Free Bike Rentals. Let me explain how it works- You grab your rental bike from the location near Fisherman’s Wharf. You will get the value of your rental for in store credit at Sports Basement, which is a sporting goods store, conveniently located on the bike trail to the bridge. So we got our bikes, paid about $35 for the day and then went to their sports store and bought $35 worth of items for FREE with our credit. Super cool and totally legit. The bike across the bridge is so fun. There are some beautiful views of the bridge on the trail from Fisherman’s Wharf. Take your time and enjoy the ride. On the way back, you can ride the ferry from Sausolito…which is my #2 favorite thing to do.
  2. Visit Sausolito and walk around the stores and ride the ferry back to the wharf. This is the best way to get back, unless you are ambitious and want to ride your bike back over the bridge. The town is charming. Be sure to stop at Venice Gourmet Delicatessen and get an Avocado Turkey Club sandwich. It’s simply amazing. The ferry ride back is super fun too. Go to the top and let the wind get in your face and enjoy the views from every angle.
  3. Ride a cable car. This totally lives up to the hype. You need to “hang out” as you are on the cable car. It’s terrifying, but totally worth it. We did it a few times. Be sure to get on the route that goes by Lombardi street. You can even hop off there and walk down the curvy street which is beautiful. A way to save on transportation in the city is to get the multi-day passes if you are there for awhile.  One Cable Car ride is $7, so it will add up. You can also walk the city pretty easily.
  4. Coit tower and the Greenwich stairs. This is a beautiful walk to the tower and then an even more beautiful walk down the stairs. I love good walks like this. You can pay to go to the top of the tower and see the views, or you can enjoy them from below.
  5. Ghirardelli Square is a must. Not only do they have amazing ice creams and sauces, the view from the square is breathtaking. Try to be there at night when the square is lit up with lights and the sun is setting on the bay. There are plenty of places to sit right there by the water and enjoy the view.

6 Clever Ways to Explore a New City and Find Unique Things to Do

We love traveling to new destinations. This world is full of beauty and there is so much to discover. I’ve noticed that when we are in new locations there are a few things we have done that make these new destinations so fun. Check these 6 tips that will help the next time you find yourself in a new city or town.

  1. Find the tallest building or mountain in the city or town. Once you find that out, then figure out a way to get to the top! If it’s a super tall mountain, obviously that won’t work, but check into what is possible. That way you can see from the tallest vantage point and might find other places you want to visit just by looking down. For example, recently we visited Austin, Texas. The tallest point there is only a short hike up to Mr. Bunnell. Once we were there we saw a picture perfect view of the city as well as the surrounding areas. That vantage point is so fun.
  2. Research what that city or town is famous for. We recently went to Philipsburg, Montana and did you know they were famous for their Montana gems? I didn’t either, until I did a little research. We were able to go mine gems and our kids absolutely loved it. Take advantage of these unique attractions that can only be done at certain places.
  3. While you are visiting the city or town, check and see if they have any festivities or celebrations going on. There are so many random celebrations that you may not even know of. When we visited the very small town of Anaconda, Montana they were having their Smelderman’s days. I had no idea this was a thing until I heard about it from a local. This fun celebration provided a money drop, free candy, BBQ, and parade. Local festivities can be anything from boat races to farmers market. Exploring the city this way makes you feel like a local and will connect you to that location.
  4. Use yelp to find one of a kind food and be daring! When in a new place you have to try the food that is unique to that area. In New York, I’ve heard the food carts that are everywhere have the best Gyros. I totally didn’t think that would be the case, but I was up to try it out. The gyro was amazing! I was so glad we gave it a try. Also, be sure to ask locals where the best places to eat are. We do that every time we are in a new place. Locals know the secrets.
  5. Use all forms of transportation. Recently we returned from New York. We were able to explore the city by plane, subway, bus, water taxi, boat, train and of course by foot. It’s amazing how each form of transportation provides a different way to view the city. You could even grab a bike or scooter. See what is provided and try a few ways of getting around instead of just one.
  6. Reach out to friends, family and acquaintances that lives in your city or town you will be visiting. Tell them you will be visiting their city and ask for recommendations and if they are free to meet up. This is one of our favorite things to do. Even if we aren’t best friends, these locals love to explore the city with you and can give you some good inside info or be an expert travel guide. On occasions these friends or family might invite you to their own home. I love these unique experiences that really bring that local element into your visit. I remember being in Austria and being inside a family home and actually seeing how they live and cook. Those experiences are truly the best.

How to Save the Most Money on Broadway Tickets in New York City

Heading to New York City? Then I’m sure you have a Broadway play on your list of things to do. However, they are pricey! We just returned from New York and found the BEST ways to save on Broadway tickets. Hopefully this will help you save some money as well as enjoy a fantastic show.

  1. TKTS Booths. You’ll want to first download their App. This will tell you which shows are available on which days. Once you know which shows you want, then head to their booths. There are 3 locations and most open at 10am- but check their site before you go. The benefits of buying from TKTS are the discounted tickets- most 50% off and the low fees which are generally around $6 per ticket, which is a lot lower than you would pay for online fees. I paid $25 per ticket just in fees online.
  2. Rush Tickets/ Same Day Tickets. To get day-of tickets, then head to the actual theater where your show is located. Check the time their ticket booth opens and be there a bit before to get in line. Generally you can get same day/rush tickets for $50 and under. Some popular shows like The Lion King don’t necessarily do “rush tickets”, but they do have $99 ticket deals for random 1 person seats or front row tickets. That’s a great way to get discount tickets as well. Again, the fees to get tickets in person are super low.
  3. Lottery tickets. You can sign up for the lottery for the show you want to see. Each show has a different way they run their lottery. So be sure to read their guidelines. The benefit of the lottery is super low tickets. Again, they may be in areas that are partial viewing or harder to see areas, but if you can get them for $10, then that’s totally worth the price.
  4. Standing Room. If you don’t mind standing during the performance, then be sure to check at the theater if there is standing room tickets available. This usually is available if a show is sold out and they have room for standing.

**When buying a ticket, be sure you buy from reputable sites and locations. There are a lot of fraudulent tickets floating around and they will not be accepted for your show. I like to stick with the Broadway.com, TKTS Booths, and the actual theater where the show is being performed.

Things to Do in Park City, Utah During the Summer

We just got back from a trip to Park City and boy was it fun. Park City has a little of everything which makes it the perfect summer vacation destination. I’ve found over the years there are some great spots to visit that are either free or affordable which makes this easy on the budget.

  1. Information Center- First you’ll want to head to the information center. There are pamphlets and coupons that you can get to save you money. One coupon you’ll want to grab is the FREE Tanger Outlet Coupon booklet. This coupon is usually just in the coupon holders by the information stands, or you can ask the employee at the booth. This coupon booklet usually costs $5, so that’s a great way to save.
  2. Utah Olympic Park- Check out their site here for all of the information. One important tip- the Olympic Park is only open from 9am-6pm. We got up there too late to enjoy the park this time. So plan accordingly. One thing you won’t want to miss is the FREE outside Discovery Zone. This is where kids can swing from ropes and maneuver through nets and suspended wires. So fun!
  3. Biking Trails- Be sure to check out all of the fun bike rides around Park City. This is FREE and a win for the whole family. If you want a nice flat trail check out the trail that goes by the dirt bike jump park  which is located at 2392 Holiday Ranch Loop Road  Park City, Utah. If you want more challenging ones, then check out these 5 trails.
  4. Tanger Outlets-Now that you have the FREE Tanger Outlet Coupon booklet, head to the stores and do some shopping. There are playgrounds for the kiddos to keep them entertained while you shop.
  5. Take a walk down historic main street. This could be a totally free activity as well, unless you want to try out a local restaurant which I highly recommend. I love walking the street as the sun is setting and the lights turn on.
  6. Alpine Slide and Coaster. This is so fun for older kids and adults. Get an all day pass or just a one-time, but it will definitely be a highlight.
  7. Attend a summer event or farmer’s market. You can always ask the information center what is going on the days you are in Park City. There are always fun ones during the summer.

Kid Friendly Hot Spots to Visit in St. George, Utah

St. George, Utah is a popular destination throughout the year. We love going down in the spring when we are antsy for blue skies and warmer weather. Every year we meet up with family to spend a few days together. That means we have a lot of kids, which makes our activities very kid friendly. Here are 5 kid friendly spots you need to check out the next time you are in St. George, Utah.

  1. Snow Canyon State Park. There are so may different hikes to go on at this state park. One of our favorite is the Butterfly trail. It’s perfect distance for younger kids.
  2. Pickle Ball Courts. Have you heard of pickle ball? It’s becoming more and more popular. St. George has many spots around that you can play for FREE. So grab some paddles and balls and go play.
  3. Pioneer Park. This park has a large trellis pavilion with two barbecues and fire ring, several smaller picnic areas with tables, two with metal trellis pavilions, and a separate fire pit with an amphitheater. It’s a great one to see the view of St. George below. Walk around and enjoy the red rocks.
  4. Thunder Junction Park. This park includes complete wheelchair accessible playground equipment, climbing wall, an “erupting” volcano, splash pad, and a “roaring” C.P. Huntington 1/4-scale train on a 2,700-foot track. My kids LOVE this park.
