I have this bay window in my bedroom that I LOVE…but I have had a hard time figuring out how to put curtains on it without breaking the bank. Have you checked out the prices of bay window curtain rods? YIKES! I am on a tight budget, so I didn’t even want to spend money on regular rods and cut them to size my window. That also added up quick.
Thanks to some research and a creative friend, I was able to make this curtain rod out of pvc pipe for my bedroom for just over $10 total!
Here is how I did it. First I measured my window to know how much pvc pipe I needed. Then I bought my materials. Some things I already had on hand. This is what I needed for the entire project:
2 10 foot 1/2 inch pvc pipe
2 elbows
2 finials (I found these ones at JoAnn’s on clearance for $4.99 for both!)
5 brackets for support on the pvc pipe
strong glue (I used Gorilla Glue)
spray paint
My husband cut the pvc pipe to the sizes that I needed: for the middle and both ends. Then I glued each finial to one end of the smaller ends. After the glue was completely dry (wait at least 24 hours) I put the rods on rebar so I could spray paint them. First I did a spray primer, then I did the black spray paint. Having the rods standing up like that really helped to get an even coat without having to turn it.
After the spray paint was dry, we put the elbow pieces on each of the ends with the finials.
We again measured where to put the rod on the wall above the window. Then we put the bracket on the pvc pipe and screwed the bracket into the wall. We continued with all the pieces, and it was so easy! It turned out beautifully!
I also did a good penny-pinching idea for the curtains. I bought one panel at Target and cut it in half. The size is perfect and they really are for decor purposes only. The panel was $15, so only $7.50 for each side! Awesome.
Total cost for doing my bay window, curtainsand rod: Just over $25! Not too shabby. The curtains were the most expensive part.
Now the only thing I need to do is a small berry garland or something across the middle, then I will totally love it!
