How to calculate your gas mileage

With gasoline prices on the rise, it has become important for people to be able to identify and monitor their car’s fuel efficiency. Knowing how to calculate your gas mileage is an essential way for you to track how much money you are spending on fuel – and monitor any improvements that you may be making to your car’s fuel consumption. It’s quite simple to DIY.

1.Take your car to the gas station and fill up your tank. Write down the exact mileage found on your odometer reading.

2.Drive around like you normally would until your car needs refueling.

3.Fill your tank up again – and this time record how many gallons it takes (you can find that number on the gas pump).

4.Check your odometer again and write down the new number.

5.Subtract your first odometer reading from your second one. This will tell you how many miles you’ve driven.

6.Divide this number by how many gallons it took to refill your car. The resulting number is your car’s current miles per gallon.

Tips:

Use the same grade of fuel at each fill-up. This will insure the most accurate reading.

It is better to do your gas mileage calculations during a period of “Normal” driving – how you usually drive. Since cars get better mileage on highways and freeways, calculating your gas mileage while on a long road trip might not give you a very accurate reading.

Recipe: Make-Ahead Frozen Burritos

Here is a fast and frugal lunch or snack to have on hand in your freezer. Instead of purchasing frozen burritos in the store try making your own. I have a good recipe you can try. I like to have these in our freezer for my husband to use in his lunches.

FROZEN BURRITOS
1 lrg can refried beans
1 lb ground beef or turkey
1 12 oz taco sauce
small can chopped green chilies
grated cheese
flour tortillas

Brown hamburger. Add beans, taco sauce, and chilies. Roll 4-5 TBL in each flour tortilla. Sprinkle with cheese. Wrap up tight. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze. When ready to eat, place in microwave. Top with sour cream, salsa, avocado, etc.

I like to wrap my burritos doing the sides first so they stay folded nice and neat and the filling doesn’t come out.

Nice and neat!

Then I labeled them and stuck them in the freezer. It’s a quick and easy item to have on hand.

Do you like to prepare food ahead of time and freeze it? What works for you?

Increase you gas mileage

You may have noticed how expensive gasoline is these days. A few simple steps can improve your gas mileage, and save money for other things you need. Follow these few steps to increase your gas mileage and ease your wallet.

1- Check your tire pressure. If it is too low, add air to bring tires to their recommended pressure. (you can swing into any tire shop and have them check it for you for free)

2- Run your car’s air conditioner less. (this of course is not something we are likely doing right no, but it is something to keep in mind)

3- Plan more efficient routes if you drive in traffic. Consolidate trips.

4- Get your oil changed regularly. Watch for coupons for oil changes and watch for specials. The shop we go to has “Lady’s Day” on Tuesdays and Thursdays so women get discounts on those days.

5- Throttle down. Drive calmly. Avoid unnecessary acceleration and braking.

6- Check your air filter. If it is dirty or old, replace it. This is quite simple to do. Ladies surprise your husband and do it yourself!

If these steps don’t seem to make a difference you may need to take your car into the mechanic. Here are a couple of things to ask them to do:

Check the gap on your spark plugs.

Get a tune up. Most advertised tune ups only include checking a few things and putting in new spark plugs. You should also ask to get new plug wires and on older cars ask for about a new distributor cap and rotor.

Look for fouled fuel injectors. Clean or replace them as necessary.

Save Money on Printer Ink

According to a recent article from Yahoo! News, you can save money on printer ink just by changing the default font of the documents you print.

It all has to do with the font you choose to use in your documents. The amount of ink that a font uses depends mostly on the thickness of the lines, or how “heavy” the font is. Those with thicker lines naturally use more ink to print. So knowing which fonts use less ink, and then using those fonts for your defaults, could help your printer cartridge last a little longer so you can pinch your pennies a little tighter!

The top choices in ink-conserving fonts? Century Gothic or Times New Roman. Printer.com, the Dutch company that ran some of these font evaluations, says that Century Gothic uses 30% less ink than Arial. However, others have rightly pointed out that Century Gothic is not necessary designed to be used for full documents and can be hard to read in that context. So they suggest sticking with Times New Roman as your best ink-saving bet.

Other ways to save:

  • Print in “economy” or “draft” mode
  • Use the double-sided print option if you have it
  • When printing text from the web, highlight the section of text you need and choose “Selection” under Page Range in File -> Print (to print just what you have highlighted), instead of printing the entire page from the default print button (which can end up printing multiple pages of text and graphics that you may not need)
  • Whenever possible, skip printing graphics or pictures in text documents
  • Print in black & white or grayscale instead of color
  • Use generic print cartridges if available or have your cartridges refilled
  • Print multiple pages per sheet of paper (depending on program settings)
