Propane for the grill – cost vs. convenience

Happy grilling weather!!! Can you believe it finally arrived?
Until recently I thought that exchanging the tank for our grill was a pretty fair deal.
Give them your empty tank and bring home a full one. Sweet!
Or is it?
I recently found out that the exchange tanks are filled to anywhere between 3 and 4.5 gallons. And you can’t tell how much you’re getting. It seemed to me that we were running out of propane a lot more often than we should be.
So I asked around at some local propane retailers and they are the ones that told me about the inconsistent fill levels in the exchange tanks. Even at their own establishments!
So, for about $20 you get somewhere between 3 and 4.5 gallons of propane. That’s $4.50 – $6.70 per gallon. If you have a mail in rebate for the exchange, that can help. There is currently a $10 rebate out there which brings the cost of a tank exchange down to $2.25 – $3.35 per gallon. That’s not too bad if you get lucky and get the fuller tank. Do you feel lucky?
But if you just get your tank refilled, you’ll know it’s full and you pay about $3.00 a gallon for it.
In my book, that’s the better option. A full tank means fewer trips to get propane.
I’d rather be home grilling!
