Inspect Before You Buy

Sometimes labels can get you really excited, but don’t get so excited that you forget to inspect the item before you buy it. Be sure to look for any rips or holes or any other damage to the item, fabric, etc.

Another thing to look carefully for is to make sure it wasn’t a counterfeit. Upper end brands (lululemon, louis vitton, etc.), all have specific ways to ensure that they are a valid product. Trust me, you don’t want to get a poor review from selling a counterfeit product.

Negotiate

Don’t be afraid to try and negotiate with the thrift store. Not all of them allow this, but some do. The worst that can happen is that they say no. The less you pay for it, the more of a profit you will make from it.

Be Open to Multiple Product Types

You can make a lot of money selling clothing. But you can also make a lot of money selling household products, books, etc. Being willing to sell more than just one product line can expand your earning potential.

That being said, if you are really good at finding deals in one particular product and you are knowledgable with it, you can build a brand around that niche. Apps such as Poshmark can allow you to really build a brand and showcase your strengths in flipping.

Sell in Multiple Places

There are several places that you can sell your thrift store flips. Being willing to sell in multiple places expands your buyer base.

Here are some great options:

  • Ebay
  • Poshmark
  • Mercari
  • OfferUp
  • FB Marketplace
  • Craigslist

I almost exclusively use poshmark and Mercari, but I have used each of the other options in the past.

My Favorite Thrift Store Flipping Tips

Thrift store flipping can certainly be a rewarding and profitable venture if done right. Here are some of my favorite tips to help you succeed in thrift store flipping:

Research

It is imperative for you to understand what sell well in the resale market. Spend a little bit of time researching popular brands, items with high demand, and current trends. This will help you be more successful in your thrift store flipping venture.

Shop at the Right Place

Not all thrift stores are created equal. I promise that this is true. I have found several stores near me that are the best for this. One is a local non-profit that has a very disorganized warehouse full of hidden goodies and the other is my local Goodwill Outlet Store. Goodwill in general can be good, but I have found some amazing stuff at their outlet stores.

Shop Often

Shop often and shop regularly. I know, I know, you love this rule, right? If you enjoy shopping, then thrift store flipping is going to be a great fit for you. The more often you go, the more likely you are to be able to snag those great, high-dollar items.

My Top Tips for Thrift Shop Flipping

Are you a thrifting enthusiast? So am I. Seriously. I may have been known to overspend a time or two during my thrift store shopping trips in the past. I love finding awesome deals on cute clothes, or home decor. I almost NEVER buy brand new home decor goodies (or clothing either for that matter). I hate spending full price and I hate wasteful shopping. I mean, why shouldn’t I enjoy something that someone has finished using? I love it!

You know what is even better than thrift store shopping though? Thrift store flipping!! Yes, tha’s right. As much as I love thrift shopping. I have found that I really love making money off of my thrift store purchases! An added bonus of my newfound love of thrift store flipping is that my husband is all for me thrifting now! He was always fine with me thrift shopping, because he knows how much I love it, but now he is excited when I head out because I am working on ways to make money, not just fill up the house with more good finds.

My Top Tips for Thrift Shop Flipping

Did you know that there are people out there who make a FULL TIME LIVING by thrift shop flipping? It’s true! If you are ready to turn your love for thrifting into a love for flipping, check out my top tips for thrift shop flipping.

Create a Budget

Whether you are thrifting for fun or for flipping, you need to set a budget. If you are doing this to make a profit, you need to set a budget and stick to it. Keep that budget low enough that you know you can make a profit when you sell.

Avoid Generic or Store Brand Items

If your goal is to flip clothing, don’t bother buying any generic or store brand clothing, no matter how cheap it is. It very rarely sells for a profit at all. Even if you find an article of clothing that is brand new with tags, people are going to pass since they know they can get it cheap themselves brand new at the store. It may seem silly, but trust me on this one. It’s a waste of money.

Download Your Selling Apps on Your Phone

No matter where you are selling (Poshmark, Mercari, OfferUp, FB Marketplace are some of my favorites), you need to download the apps onto your phone and keep your phone with you as you shop. With the apps so easily accessible, you can quickly look up the sales value of the items before you buy.

The Best Way to Make Money by Shopping at Thrift Stores

Do you like to go thrift shopping?  Me too!! Listen, I have been one to overspend at thrift shops on stuff that I loved but didn’t need, I have gotten fab deals on stuff that I do need.  Both of those things feel amazing and are a ton of fun, but the thing is, neither compare to the thrill of shopping at thrift stores to flip your item just to make big money!  It’S AWESOME! I’m not exaggerating one bit.

Flipping at thrift stores is a great way to make extra money, but there are also quite a few people who make a full time lucrative living.

Set a budget.  Set a budget for how much you can afford to invest and stick to it. Look at this like a business and run it that way.  Buy things at super low prices, but ONLY things that you will be able to sell at a profit and as quickly as possible.

Stick to name brand items.  It’s hard to sell clothes that are walmart brand, or other non-well known brand.  I get it though. I don’t buy off brand clothes used when I know I can buy them for like $5 brand new.

Shop on discount days.  As you can tell by my previous thrift shopping posts, I am a big believer in those discount days.  This is no different (actually it’s probably just MORE important) for flipping your thrift store finds.  If you don’t know what I am talking about, be sure to get to know your store’s schedule for sales or days that they offer color tag discounts.  For me, my local Goodwill offers a discount on a specific color tag and this deal changes every Sunday, so Sunday is a great day to shop there! Get to know this type of schedule and you will find some good deals.
